About the Author
Nadine C. Duncan is an educator, student, and travel enthusiast who has been blessed to visit over thirty-five countries as of 2015. She was born in New Jersey to Trinidadian parents and grew up traveling to the West Indies every summer. Those awesome summers allowed Nadine to develop a deep appreciation for similarities and differences of the Trinidadian and American cultures. At the age of 27, Nadine moved to Abu Dhabi, UAE and resided there as an educator for a little over three years. That experience fortified her appreciation of different cultures and motivated her to visit countries she never expected to. Nadine currently resides in Atlanta, GA where she is the Founder and Director of a non-profit entitled, The PrOOF Project. She plans to continue traveling and exploring while inspiring other women to do the same.

Great tool for International Travel

The Diary of a Traveling Black Woman is a must read for anyone who wants to travel and explore the world and its’ numerous diverse cultures. This guide provides both the novice and expert traveler with basic tools to help them identify, set, and implement their traveling goals. The author’s writing style is conversational, which makes it easy to read; however, it covers a vast amount of traveling related essentials to include: booking a trip, what to pack, and the use of money when traveling abroad. The journal portion serves as a motivational tool to help the reader plan their next great vacation.

Fascinating, but pretty technical for non-scientists

Learned a lot of fascinating things, but as a non-scientist, it was pretty technical. You don't really need a physics background, and they're aren't any math equations, but it was so full of information that it feels like I'm taking a college course. I guess with a subject as difficult as this, if it were simplified I wouldn't really learn that much. I've read a few other books on the subject (Particle Physics: A Very Short Introduction by Frank Close, Facts and Mysteries in Elementary Particle Physics by Martinus Veltman and The Particle Garden by Gordon Kane). I learned a lot by each one, because they each cover physics in a different way. If you are willing to put in some time and effort, you will be rewarded.

For beginners, I would recommend going to the Wikipedia article about particle physics, and saving and printing the purple, green, red and yellow chart with all the particles; and cutting, saving and printing the chart with the 61 particles. The Particle Adventure is also a great free beginner website.

A Primer for Future Scientists

This book is straight forward and tries to present an elementary overview of a very complex and detailed subject: particle physics. For a college student looking for an intro and overview of the body of this science, it's pretty effective. As a primer for non-math/science geeks, it lacks a level of analogy and practical application and tends to dwell in the details. This latter is how the book was recommended to me by a world-renowned physicist, but the author states that he was aiming more at doing a good job of the former.

This is one of those books you really need to read in small doses and make your own notes as you go if you want to actually glean the knowledge it seeks to transfer. The details...new terminology, strange concepts, key relationships and interactions...come at you rapid fire. The book has a good glossary that helps to reduce frustration. It is more of a text book in basic particle physics than I had hoped, but my expectations were probably unrealistic. After all, we're talking about particle physics. It makes for good bedtime reading if you're interested in particle physics and don't have much exposure to it, because it will put you to sleep on a chapter by chapter basis.

Great pictures

I bought this book for a vertebrate zoology class. Some of the text was a little above my head, but the class mainly used it for the awesome pictures and diagrams of dissection.

Its been great so far (only about halfway through it)

So far the text and graphics have been exactly what I needed to prepare for my Comparative Vertebrate Anamtomy course. Conversational and easy read. Good explanations, but was hoping for a "key points" at the beginning of each chapter or more bolded words to show me what to focus on. Very accurate from what I have been learning in class.

Great read, even if you're not dissecting!

Love this book, but I wish it had more pictures. Also, some pictures are not what the Dissector asks you to dissect (e.g. a picture of the shark shows a transverse cut [its head seems to have been cut completely off], and the text makes not one mention of you doing this). I love the cladograms in the first two chapters, but some of the names are outdated and misleading! Read up on your own, and if you have a mentor suggesting you this book he/she will tell you what's up (if they're a good one!)

About the Author
Nivaldo J. Tro received his BA degree from Westmont College and his PhD degree from Stanford University. He went on to a postdoctoral research position at the University of California at Berkeley. In 1990, he joined the chemistry faculty at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California. Professor Tro has been honored as Westmont's outstanding teacher of the year three times (1994, 2001, and 2008). He was named Westmont's outstanding researcher of the year in 1996. Professor Tro lives in the foothills of Santa Barbara with his wife, Ann, and their four children, Michael, Alicia, Kyle, and Kaden. In his leisure time, Professor Tro likes to spend time with his family in the outdoors. He enjoys running, biking, surfing, and snowboarding.

It's better than having no solution manual, however it does skip steps.

I WOULD DEFINITELY get this if you are doing problems in Chemistry, A Molecular Approach. Believe me, I tried it with no solutions manual and got headaches from trying to figure out some of the cumulative and challenge problems at the end of the chapter. The solutions only cover the odd problems, which is good enough. Steps are skipped in some solutions, but you can figure it out from there if you spend some time breaking down the solutions, this in turn will help you with other problems. Write notes in the solutions manual with a pencil to help you while you are breaking it down. For some numbers that seem to come out of nowhere, type those numbers into Google, sometimes they are constants or chemical standard notations that haven't been covered yet at that point in the book. Sometimes you can also use the text index to look up unfamiliar notations by topic and other things that have not been covered yet at the chapter you are at.

It's a decent read, but don't go out of your way to get this

I guess for $16 it's a decent read, but it's one of those examples of a story which a good idea as the premise, but a not so entertaining follow-through of that idea. Has some good and fun moments, but I don't think the overall story is as good as it could have been. Quite honestly, the 22 minute episode of the same name from the Batman Brave and the Bold cartoon (which is loosely based off of this comic), did a better job of telling a story. If you're interested in the premise, go seek out that episode of the same name of this story.

When I first began making the transition from UNIX device drivers to those for Windows NT, there weren't a lot of available resources to help me along. However, things have changed over the past couple of years, and there is now plenty of information, including articles in Dr. Dobb's Journal and Microsoft Systems Journal, Paula Tomlinson's "Understanding NT" column in Windows Developer's Journal, Microsoft Developer Network, the Microsoft web site, and various other resources on the Internet. However, the place I recommend you start is with Windows NT Device Driver Development, by Peter G. Viscarola and W. Anthony Mason.

Windows NT Device Driver Development is a well-organized, easy to read, and complete introduction to NT device driver development. It could be read cover to cover as a student text. Because of its clean layout, the book is as valuable a reference as any of the resources listed above.

About the Author
Peter G. Viscarola is a founder of, and Consulting Partner at, Open Systems Resources (OSR), the world-renowned consulting firm specializing in Windows NT systems internals. During more than 20 years in the computer industry, including more than 10 years as an independent consultant, Peter has developed device drivers and protocol implementations under a wide array of operating systems. Since the release of Windows NT, Peter has designed or developed more than three dozen Windows NT drivers, including drivers for almost every type of programmed I/O and DMA device imaginable. Recent Windows NT driver projects include development of high-speed drivers for ATM[r], ISDN, and Frame Relay devices, as well as design of special Kernel mode drivers for a number of unique situations. Peter's particular areas of expertise include networking and high-speed DMA architectures, where hardware-driver interactions are critical. Peter has a long background developing and teaching hig! h-tech courses, and is the developer and chief instructor of Open Systems Resources Windows NT Kernel Mode Device Driver Seminar. Peter attended Columbia University and the University of Michigan, where he studied applied statistics and computer science, and Lesley College, where he studied applied management. Peter is a regular contributor to and columnist for The NT Insider, Open Systems Resources journal of Windows NT systems internals. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE and a voting member of the ACM.

W. Anthony Mason is an Open Systems Resources Consulting Partner with experience in a wide array of system software disciplines during the past 16 years. Tony is also an internationally recognized expert in file systems technologies. Among his recent projects has been the design and development of several Windows NT installable file system drivers, including both physical media file systems and networked distributed file systems. In addition to his file systems expertise, Tony is Open Systems Resources resident expert on NT's Memory Manager and Cache Manager subsystems. i've looked at several books for windows device drivers, and this book is by far the best. It explains the 'why' instead of just pushing out examples with no explanation. Also, it's written by the osr group. in my opinion, the osr group consists of the real experts on windows device driver development. i would highly recommend this book. also, in my personal opinion, i found it to be far superior to the official windows books which are over $100 each.

This book is VERY well written and VERY readable. I needed other sources to get an actual driver written (see Chris Cant's book) but only because this book gives a much more complete picture and I needed something more specific. That's my point...if you want a good, solid understanding of the system and an excellent reference, get this book. It's not often one finds technical-minded people with such writing skill.

Profit From Experience

Whether publishing their own work or taking in manuscripts, publishers pursue fame, fortune or both. Unfortunately, most publishers are interested primarily in marketing, promoting and distributing; selling more books. Tom Woll shows you something more important: keeping track; counting your money. He shows you how to manage your cash and organize your business--to sell more books.

Keep this close at hand

As a small publisher, I definitely want to get to a successful bottom-line! This book is helping Chalfont House become even more successful. It's one thing to say that a published book is working well...but show me the numbers! Publishing for Profit shows you exactly what you need to know for a Title Profit and Loss statement. Other topics demonstrated are: defining your niche, goal setting, budgeting, cash flow analysis, income statements, balance sheets, planning, contracts, distribution, marketing, advertising and publicity, and operations. Those sound like dreadful, math-filled, boring accounting topics, but Woll makes them urgently relevant.
There are 35 highly valuable forms/tables included: book sales by channel; publishing time line; organization chart; budget template; cash flows; growth rate; income statement; editorial plan; comparative book template; title p&l; contract analysis; title fact sheet; production schedule and checklist; tip sheet; book list analysis; sales tracking; marketing plan; author questionnaire; subsidieary rights forms; and book club pricing template.

Thomas Woll has the expertise to teach about publishing.

Thomas Woll draws from a variety of publishing experiences including being a start-up publisher and years of consulting for a variety of publishing clients. He has the expertise to teach us the publishing business.
He covers the gamut of publishing. Subjects covered include defining your niche, structuring your staff, using financial projections, the editorial process, copyrights, book production, sales, more sales, fulfillment, publicity, selling subsidiary rights (a special expertise of his), direct mail marketing (another of his areas of special expertise), and (ugh) returns. I can't imagine a publisher, new or experienced, not being able to find great value in this book.
Tom gives a variety of valuable forms and charts to use for tracking data and strategic planning. We've decided to incorporate several of these into our operations. He also goes through in greater detail than I've seen in any other book the projections you need to run in order to manage your cash flow. Cash flow will make or break your publishing company. Study these sections carefully.
I speak from my own experience as a small publisher: If you're a small publisher, you need to know the information in this book. As Tom says, publishing is a tough business, and you need the competitive edge of this knowledge.
