Very good!

As a database programmer for 15 years, I like to re-enforce my knowledge of a skill by getting back to the basics once in a while. This book by Andy Oppel explained database concepts very well. I tried to put myself in the mind of a newbie to see how these concepts would present themselves to me as such. Mr. Oppel has succeeded very well. He takes from an overview to SQL, normalization, logical and physical database design, through more advanced subjects like UML, XML and OLAP. Now, this book won't substitute a full course-load at your college or university, but, it will get you started if you've been "volunteered" to get a database up and running at your office.

Mr. Oppel doesn't focus on any particular database package, and that's good; you can apply these concepts to Oracle, Access, MySQL, etc. There is even a chapter focusing on SQL that assumes you're using Oracle.

Note that the author doesn't provide any SQL batch programming; it's not a programming book at all. He just gets you up and running.

In sum, a good companion book to your college level intro to database theory textbook. Since Mr. Oppel teaches this at the college level, he provides questions at the end of each chapter. I recommend you answer them for yourself, if you are going this alone.

Just an update to "Demystified"

Here's a tip folks, based on extensive skimming at the book store just now, I found that "Databases: a Beginner's Guide" is simply a minor update to the earlier and much cheaper "Databases Demystified" by Oppel. And yes, I mean the same book, retitled. I mean it's really weird I thought I had deja vue til I realized what the deal was. May be something new added, but can't be much.

Great introduction to relational database management systems

It's a great book to get started on learning about relational database management systems. The author used Microsoft Access to help you see the entity relations as a beginner, which helps you draw a mental picture on how relational database works. I like the author's perspective of "if you were to design a car, you should probably know how to drive one first".

Despite his failure to suppress the rebellious Cort�s in Mexico, would-be conquistador P�nfilo de Narv�ez was given another chance by the king of Spain, who awarded him governorship over the entire Gulf Coast of the modern United States. But Narv�ez's luck was no better this time: the expedition, which arrived in 1528, was a complete disaster. Out of the 400 men who went ashore in Florida, only four made it to Mexico eight years later, long after Narv�ez himself was lost at sea in a makeshift boat. Schneider (The Adirondacks) has only two firsthand documents to work with, but he ably combines the raw narrative with a wealth of secondary research to create a vivid tale filled with gripping scenes, as when natives lead the starving Spanish forces into a swamp ambush. Schneider presents would-be conquistador Cabeza de Vaca's incredible survival story. The treasurer of an attempted conquest of Florida in 1528, de Vaca was one of four remnants of the disastrous Narvaez expedition and wrote a memoir about his ordeal. Working off that central document, Schneider seamlessly fixes it to contextual sources (archaeology; records of the ensuing de Soto and Coronado expeditions) to render a perceptive sense of the country the fugitive Spaniards traveled through and the Indians they encountered. Under the theme of inverted expectations, Schneider relates the Spaniards' incremental descent from violently self-assured superiority over Indians, to dependence, and, finally, enslavement for the last of the living. That one of them, Esteban, already a slave, helped lead the band to Mexico, and received re-enslavement for his pains, enhances Schneider's excellent development of cultural self-perceptions. Stellar, gripping adventure

Paul Schneider's third book is a delight from cover to cover. The Odyssey-like narrative is full of suspense, sublime characters, and indelible scenes that sound almost made up. The fact that this amazing, tragic and (brutal) journey happened right under today's strip malls and freeways along the Gulf Coast makes it even more amazing.

The reader is transported like an archeologist straight into the rampaging egos, wild delusions and doomed strategies of the would be conquistadors. They traverse "their' thoroughly alien and violent territory with eyes wide shut, battered to and fro as if from one of the squalls that greet their arrival in the New World from the get-go.

Schneider is a masterful writer, and the text is lean and full of sly wit. It's mercifully shorn of the unwieldy and tedious detail to which so many historians subject their readers. The structure is crisp and orderly, and moves swiftly. The author seems to enjoy peeling back the layers of this larger-than-life tale as much as the reader will, and we can thank Schneider for unveiling this vital piece of American history.

Incredible!

Amazing story of 400 Spanish explorers who walked into the bush of southern Florida in the 1520s and disappeared - eight years later four survivors showed up naked in Mexico with nothing but a few hundred friendly Indians in tow. In the intervening 8 years it was one page-turning adventure after the next, mostly dire tales of starvation, violence and exotic peoples, but also the spinning wheel of fortune from conquerer to slave and back again. They were the first to enter North America and cross it, encountering countless tribes and customs of the new world that within a century or two completely vanished. An otherwise little known story today, it was a classic best-seller in the 16th century, retold here with the latest scholarly findings.

Note: the original story was by Alvar N��ez Cabeza de Vaca called "Castaways" (1555) (also goes by other names) and is still highly readable and widely available in modern English translation, it is a classic of 16th century literature. National Geographic ranks Cabeza de Vaca's narrative #63 on their "100 Best Adventure Books" list. I have not read it and wonder how it compares with this modern retelling.

Schneider's retelling is as good as "Over the Edge of the World" ("Brutal" takes place about 12 years after Magellan's expedition returned to Spain). Where Cabeza de Vaca's narrative has blank spots Schneider fills in from a lot of other sources. For the non-specialist this book is a synthesis of a lot of scholary research and discoveries, and also just a great adventure story.

There IS a movie!!

For everyone who wishes this book were made into a movie - your wishes WERE granted in 1993 when "Cabeza de Vaca" (winner of 8 international film awards) was released by Roger Corman - directed by Mexican director Nicolas Echevarria. When I first saw the movie, it just blew me away. This movie inspired me to find and read "Adventures in the Unknown Interior of America" (University of New Mexico Press)- the translated account of de Vaca's report to the king of Spain (obviously one of the many sources for Schneider). I do believe I bought my VHS copy of "Cabeza de Vaca" from Amazon.com (haven't checked to see if it is available in DVD - hopefully so) If you liked Schneider's book, then find, buy, and ENJOY this remarkable film.

For years readers have enjoyed Charles Waterton's intriguing book, Wanderings in South America, about his adventurous travels in Guiana, West Indies. Waterton, a famous English eccentric and naturalist, returned to England in 1821 from an expedition to Guiana, where he had collected hundreds of specimens of South American wildlife, all carefully preserved.

On a second expedition to Guiana he acquired the head of an amazing specimen he described as the "Nondescript," a fur-covered, manlike creature native to the South American jungle. Adding a touch of intrigue to this compelling narrative is the rumor that the Nondescript bears a startling resemblance to an overzealous customs inspector who had caused him so much grief upon his return in 1821. It is popular opinion that Waterton, in his own peculiar way, was literally trying to "make a monkey" out of an annoying tax collector.

About the Author
Naturalist and explorer CHARLES WATERTON (1782-1865) was born in Yorkshire, England, to a family eminent in the service of the state. In 1796, he pursued higher studies at Stonyhurst, where he developed his early passion for natural history. Determined to start exploring the hinterland of Guiana at intervals of four years, he made the four adventurous expeditions described in the well-known Wanderings in South America.

Armchair travelor

Anyone interested in Latin America jungles by foot? Waterton endures language barriers and jungle fever. Addicted to traveling, his narration of his 1816-1824 journeys are lightening informitive, as well as his opinion of humanity around him. His old English could use some defining but does not deter your interest.

It was okay.

The imagery of the book was very well done. I could easily imagine the beauty of the forests. A lot of the speech came off a bit flowery, but not so much that you needed footnotes to explain what they meant.

The details were, at times, a bit painful to read (I refer specifically to the times some act of animal cruelty was mentioned - i.e. poisoning of the dog to show just how lethal and fast acting a certain poison was).

Some of my favorite parts was when he was describing the animals, specifically the sloths, and out of all the journeys, the third was my favorite solely because a large chunk of it talked about the animals there.

My only complaint is how the book was broken up. It's great he separated the journeys but I wish there were chapter breaks in the journeys because running it all together made it seem a little tedious and, at times, confusing.

About the Author
Wayne L. Winston is Professor Emeritus of Decision Sciences at the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University and is now a Professor of Decision and Information Sciences at the Bauer College at the University of Houston. He has won more than 45 teaching awards, including the school-wide MBA award six times. His current interest is in showing how spreadsheet models can be used to solve business problems in all disciplines, particularly in finance, sports, and marketing. In addition to publishing more than 20 articles in leading journals, Dr. Winston has written such successful textbooks as OPERATIONS RESEARCH: APPLICATIONS AND ALGORITHMS, MATHEMATICAL PROGRAMMING: APPLICATIONS AND ALGORITHMS, SIMULATION MODELING WITH @RISK, DATA ANALYSIS FOR MANAGERS, SPREADSHEET MODELING AND APPLICATIONS, MATHLETICS, DATA ANALYSIS AND BUSINESS MODELING WITH EXCEL 2013, MARKETING ANALYTICS, and FINANCIAL MODELS USING SIMULATION AND OPTIMIZATION. From Deterministic to Stochastic

This is one of the excellent industrial engineering books. From deterministic and simple linear programming to stochastic systems such as queueing models or dynamic programming, you may read and "learn" lots of things about OR. However, for stochastic cases you will need extra help for its matematics. But if you want to learn something about industrial engineering or something related with it, that is the book you must buy.

I have used this book for five years in my Operation Research classes. Its emphasis is in the mathematical modeling. The explanations are complete and clean. But, the exercises are the best part: a lot of examples and modeling exercises. A very good book for engineering students.

About the Author
Peter Wadhams is the UK's most experienced sea ice scientist. He was Director of the Scott Polar Institute in Cambridge from 1987 to 1992 and Professor of Ocean Physics at Cambridge from 1992 to 2015. He has made more than 50 expeditions to both polar regions, working from ice camps, icebreakers, aircraft, and, uniquely, Royal Navy submarines (making six submerged voyages to the North Pole). His research group in Cambridge has been the only UK group with the capacity to carry out field work on sea ice. He has also held visiting professorships at the National Institute of Polar Research, Tokyo, the US Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, the University of Washington, Seattle and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, La Jolla. Peter Wadhams has been awarded the W.S. Bruce Prize of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (1977), the UK Polar Medal (1987) and the Italgas Prize for Environmental Sciences (1990). He is an Associate Professor at the Laboratoire d'Oc�anographie de Villefranche, and a Professor at the Universit� Politecnica delle Marche, Ancona. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and a Member of the Finnish Academy.

Important Read

Professor Wadhams explains in satisfying detail the dire and immediate nature of the issues we humans face as the arctic continues to warm at record pace and the ice disappears! He explains the significance of albedo loss on both land and sea and what this means for continued planetary warming. Most alarmingly, he raises near term concern (referencing field research by Shakova & Semiletov) for a high risk methane event due to the warm water interacting with the subsea permafrost layer . Wadhams urges for a multi-national Manhattan type project to figure out a way to extract carbon from the atmosphere as a bridge solution until we can convert our societal energy base. The information is compelling enough to make the man on the street consider his own solution and not wait around for leaders to wake up from their laze and cowardice. His experience is second to none - on submarines doing the ice research since the 1960's, literally an eyewitness to many of the patterns he describes. I'm so very glad to have read his most informed writings!

Should be required reading for each citizen of planet Earth. Praise to Professor Wadhams for writing with honesty!

Excellent - as long as it sticks to the ice

This is an essential read for anyone concerned about climate change. Wadhams brilliantly balances precision with clarity and produces a document that is both readable and compelling.
I have a few quibbles, however, some minor and some less so:
1) Like many of his age group, Wadhams bemoans the lack of action among the youth of today, comparing their behavior (predictably) to the halcyon days of the anti-Vietnam war movement. The reasons why this sort of charge is unfair and inaccurate are so numerous and so well-examined that I won’t bother to summarize them here. Suffice to say that before pointing fingers Wadhams ought to look a bit more carefully at what’s actually going on amongst millennials, and to try to understand the insidious effects of the atomization of popular culture in the past several decades. (Note: I was born in 1960, so am of the same general cohort as Wadhams.)
2) Like far too many scientists, Wadhams has been suckered by the “nuclear energy will save us (or could have, if we’d gone for it sooner)” ideology. The problem with this argument is that it imagines that energy is the only limiting factor in the equation. But energy needs something to work on in order to be of any use. If we were suddenly to be presented with a limitless energy source that had no environmental costs whatsoever, we would still be in a dreadful predicament, given the imminent collapse of industrial agriculture and the continued unraveling of global ecosystems. In order to ratchet down the level of threat to the planet posed by humans, we would need to drastically reduce both a) the amount of stuff we consume per capita, and b) the number of human beings. Since the first is clearly unlikely at best and the second is not something that can be discussed as a policy action, that leads to what I take to be the greatest weakness of this book, along with most of what is coming out of the scientific community in regard to climate change:
3) The focus on “what we can do” in the book’s final chapters obscures and distracts from the need to understand what we’ve already done that can’t be undone. The odds are strongly stacked in favor of catastrophe. The likelihood of humanity (and the majority of the other multicellular organisms that inhabit our planet) achieving a soft landing is vanishingly small. No doubt his publishers required Wadhams to strike some sort of hopeful note, but let’s at least be realistic: if we haven’t already ensured the utter destruction the only planet we will ever have, we have critically wounded it. We need to recognize that our net impact has been hugely negative. We need to find the humility to accept the fact that we as a species do not have the ability to clean up our own mess.

No comfort for Climate diniers

Although the prediction by Prof Wadhams that we would see ice free conditions in the Arctic (>1m square km) at the minimum in 2015 proved to be a little early, he is right on the money about what is happening in the Arctic. The decrease of ice is erratic but the trend is clear and the predicted effects on the rest of the world, very likely. Another year like 2012 added (actually subtracted) from the trend will put us very close to his prediction. Incidentally, look at the NSIDC result for the recovery of ice in Oct 2016,
