About the Author
Matthew Goldstein served as Chancellor of The City University of New York for fourteen years until 2013. During that time the University saw a resurgence in growth, quality indicators, economic stability and reputation. He is the author of numerous research papers in mathematics and a co-author in three advanced books in statistics. Goldstein was awarded the Carnegie Academic Leadership Award in 2007 and elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2006, among many other honors.

George Otte was named Director of Instructional Technology for The City University of New York in 2001, and renamed the University Director of Academic Technology in 2008. That same year he became the chief academic officer of the CUNY School of Professional Studies, home of CUNY’s fully online degrees. (He was there for the launch of the first online degree; there are now twelve; eight Bachelor’s and four Master’s.) An English professor for decades–he directed writing programs at Baruch College for fifteen years and was awarded that school’s Teaching Excellence award in 1993–he is on the doctoral faculty of the programs in English, Urban Education, and Interactive Technology and Pedagogy at the CUNY Graduate Center. He has chaired the CUNY IT Conference since 2002 and the CUNY Committee on Academic Technology since 2008. He earned his doctorate at Stanford in what was then the new (still extant) Modern Thought and Literature program in 1982.

Getting the real messages of fear and anxiety

WHAT THIS BOOK INCLUDES: Techniques for our conscious to connect with our unconscious where many of the root causes of dysfunctional behaviors are. Dr. Schaub gives detailed methods to recognize the messages that anxiety and fear signal from our unconscious. These techniques help us shift our perceptions to incorporate the real information from our subconscious into our consciousness. These alternative thought patterns enable us to access a more functional, balanced approach to life. He also teaches ways to check back with our subconscious to keep us on our new functional paths. I strongly recommend this approach to anyone struggling with negative emotions and/or thought forms causing dysfunction in their lives.
HOW THIS BOOK CHANGED MY LIFE: In my work with this book and with Dr Schaub, I became aware of many life long negative thought forms that affected my self perception. We worked through these by the recording at least several negative self-comments which I counter balanced with at least 3 positive comments regarding each "self-abuse". I had been conscious of some of these self-defeating patterns, but was astounded at how many and how deep these patterns can be. And this helped me be less depressed and more willing to keep working. Beyond that we/I discovered parts of myself that I had submerged. The anxiety, fears, worries, negative approach to life were telling me these parts needed love, acceptance, and upliftment. I'm a pediatrician and have no trouble being compassionate with and treating children with unconditional love. It has been a joy to be able to unconditionally love myself. Recognizing, accepting, and developing alternative ways of dealing with the fears/anxiety and the underlying self needs has been revolutionizing in my life. And using these techniques to recognize when I'm slipping back into old negative thought forms, getting back in touch with the real message and doing something about that has brought me out of life-long depression. Being in touch with the joy and enjoyment of life makes being here on Earth infinitely better. And to remember to practice, practice, practice these principles and techniques helps keep me free of anxieties and fears that I had allowed to restrict my life.

THE BEST BOOK EVER

THE BEST BOOK EVER! I have been suffering from anxiety for almost a decade, and I tried almost everything to get rid of it but without any real effect. But when I began reading this book, for the first time ever, I began healing. This is because Freidemann not only gives you the answer for what created anxiety in the first place, but also because he gives a step by step program to resolve the issue. Another great thing about the book was that I actually felt a difference from the first chapter. The book is also written in a very easy to understand language, at it goes right to the core of the problems, which I found very helpful. Earlier I wound tend to see the anxiety in itself as the problem, as an enemy that I hated, but Friedemann provided a power insight by explaining the benefits of anxiety - that the real purpose of anxiety is to protect us, and thus it's not the anxiety in itself which is the problem. Now, because this book has almost cured me from my anxiety, I am of course in all praise for the author Freidemann, and I can highly recommend it to others.

A scientific and fact-based solution for negative emotions

I rarely write recommendation for books on any website, and in fact, this is probably the first review I’ve ever written for any book. The only reason is that Fear and Anxiety Solution truly helped me enormously.

When I was 17 or 18, I was having an important exam the next day. I had an awful night of sleep where I was constantly waked up by noises. Ever since I’ve experienced negative emotions when trying to sleep. But my parents would not understand what it’s all about, and there seemed to be no use talking to anymore; so I just hid this within myself, until it became increasingly exasperating that I did not even dare to think about sleep in the day time. No one around seemed to have this sort of worry, and for quite a few years I secretly thought there was something wrong with my brain, and I just had to live with it like that.

Growing up immersed in hard science (physics, chemistry and such), I did not believe in therapy. I used to laugh at my friends who practiced meditation, and I remember when I went to see my first therapist by accident, I was challenging her with all sorts of questions like: isn’t anxiety generated by wrong chemicals firing in my brain?

My negative emotions for falling asleep gradually got better with therapy, but it’s only when one day I bumped into Dr. Schaub’s work that I truly became aware of the mechanism of why I thought the old way I used to, and how to change that. The book did not have any fluff that talks about things I find hard to believe (for example gurus in India cured patients with only cigarette ashes and such), but explained psychology and physiology in a way that I find acceptable and trustworthy. Therefore, it is convincing for me that I am doing something scientifically correct, not just some wishy-washy stuff like a lot of other books too.

I would highly recommend anyone to try this book if he/she experiences any negative emotions. By the way, the book also has a nice Audible version as while that contains the succinct info of the book and many therapies recording you could just play for exercises.

An enjoyable read; great for History buffs; easy read

CONCEPT: A History professor is whisked back in time to Rome; only a few years before it's about to fall; with his foresight he attempts to not only create a living for himself but, at a later point, to stop the fall of Rome
HISTORY SETTING: 6th century Italy; very interesting setup. I didn't know much about it and rarely is it covered except in passing as they focus on other parts of the world. DeCamp knows his material.
PACING: The story is only 260 pages long which is small for today's fantasy novels which go from 600 to 1000 pages. No particular story lasted a long time. Decamp would jump from conflict to conflict. In essence, it began with little problems, moving its way up and up to the bigger and more political ones. And, there are plenty. In fact, there are so many plots and intrigues and obstacles and conflicts, that it keeps moving along. Padway will solve one problem but then pick up at least one problem or more.
CONTEXT: Sprague knew his Roman History. There were several Historical points he factored into the story that allowed him to outthink his opponents. Moreover, I got a feel for the setting with the incense wafting out of a door, the togas, the smell of manure, the louse coming out of the maid's armpit . . . etc etc. Unlike some people, one felt they were truly living in this era. Sprague hit you with all of the senses: sight, smell, touch, sound.
OVERALL STRUCTURE: DeCamp is really good at his structure and surprises and pacing. Basically, I would divide this book up into three sections. The first part is laying down the ground work as Padway tries to figure out what has happened, to justify it, to make a living with the help of a merchant and open up a brandy sill. As high reps demand bribes, he begins to get involved in politics to a lesser extent. From there, he starts to expand his business and make friends. In the last third, which is probably half of the novel, he starts to run Rome. Puts the old emperor back on and uses him as sort of a puppet. Moves the capitol to Ravenna since that's one of the few spots which wasn't attacked by Goths. He wins the love of a Goth princess, dumps her to another man and then gets ready for several attacks upon Rome. Leads forces twice against Belisarius and then Bloody John.
WHY IT WORKED FOR ME: Other than the reasons stated above, I like Roman History and there were some very funny parts; especially in the dialogue!
FLAWS: Someone made the point that Padway was a little too ingenius at creating future inventions, as well as at maneuvering amongst all the political intrigues. There may be some validity to it but one who has studied such things wouldn't be hard pressed otherwise. It may have been a good idea to have shown that he knew of such things before since the typical professor wouldn't be able to make them nor perform political intrigues.

One of my absolute favorites

I've lost count of how many times I've read this book and had to replace it at least once. De Camp's depiction of the life, events and people of post-Imperial Italy are dead on accurate as far as I can tell, and the fictional aspect of the work is highly engaging.
The book gives away its 1938 vintage, when the protagonist Martin Padway is able to exchange about $5.00 worth of modern Italian coins for 93 post-Imperial silver sesterces, enabling him to survive his first 72 hours in old Rome. He could do this, of course, because in 1938 Italy, like most countries, still circulated real silver coins. I can't help wondering how the protagonist would have fared if he only had today's inflated zinc and tin tokens?

Exciting, if not Deep, Sci-fi Adventure Tale

While on an expedition to Mussolini's Italy, young American Martin Padway is struck by lightning. When he comes to, he discovers himself to have been inexplicably transported to the waning days of the Roman Empire. Quickly realizing that he has no hope of returning home, Padway resolves to prop up the flagging Western Empire and stave off the approaching dark ages. But is he politically astute enough to handle the destructive forces within and without Rome?

L. Sprague De Camp's "Lest Darkness Fall" is justly considered a classic of science fiction. It's a time travel story, but it is also cited by many as an early example of the alternate history genre. So its influence cannot be understated.

De Camp is not aiming for gravity, which is probably a good thing. The book is a breezy, plot-driven adventure, not a meditation on history. Padway is a well-developed character, if perhaps a little TOO competent and resourceful. Upon realizing his predicament, Padway hunts up the basics, including a dwelling and a source of income, first with brandy, and then with a newssheet. However, Padway makes a quick jump from brandy merchant and printer to power-broker with surprising speed and confidence. He manipulates royalty and leads battles, surprising himself with his ruthlessness. While De Camp's story flirts with implausibility, it never enters the realm of ridiculous.

The supporting characters are generally likeable archetypes, like the banker who speaks to God, the formerly-rich soldier who has been reduced to acting as Padway's bodyguard, the senile monarch, and so on. They serve the story and Padway's quest. Moreover, while De Camp knows the history of the era, he opts for broad strokes, acknowledging the fractured nature of Christianity, the tension between West and East, and the multi-cultural state of Rome at this time. It's probably for the best, as this isn't a treatise on the fall of Rome, but a story about Padway. Nonetheless, the reader may feel slightly adrift in generally unfamiliar era.

"Lest Darkness Falls" is a book that satisfies the reader's desire for a good adventure, if not the desire for brain-food. It's an entertaining tale, and is worth reading on its own merits, as well as an artifact of sci-fi.
