About the Author
Rowena Cory Daniells lives in Queensland, Australia, by the bay with her husband and has six children. She has devoted five years to studying each of these martial arts: Tae Kwon Do, Aikido and Iaido, the art of the Samurai Sword. She has supported the writing community by serving on the management committees of two Australian national genre awards, the Queensland Writers Centre, the Brisbane Writers Festival and Fantastic Queensland. Her short stories have appeared in magazines and anthologies including ‘Dreaming DownUnder’ which won World Best Fantasy and ‘Dreaming Again’. A solid, largely satisfying end to the saga

Not to be deliberately facetious, but I only had two concerns with King Breaker, the conclusion to King Rolen's Kin - namely, the beginning and the end. That's not to say that this is, by any means a bad book, or that Rowena Cory Daniells did, in any respect, a poor job of wrapping up the various threads left hanging after The Usurper. Far from it. It's simply an acknowledgement of where I had issues.

Let's start with the beginning. Granted, Daniells had a lot to catch up on in terms of characters and plot threads, but I found the opening chapters to be a very slow read. There's a lot of talk, a lot of angst, and a lot of shared frustration, but nothing that really moves the story forward. For the most part, it's a lot of set-up and maneuvering of game pieces, setting up the reunions and confrontations that we know will drive the heart of the story. We're actually a good 150 pages in before the story really takes off, but once it does, it's just as good - if not better - than any of the books that came before.

While the entire saga has largely been Byron's story, the other main characters get a lot of time centre stage in this final volume. Fyn's story is likely my favorite and, if not the strongest, one of the most pivotal. He really struggles with his loyalties, stuck somewhere between love and duty, and I thought Daniells carried his story well. Florin's story I didn't care for quite as much, mainly because it felt so drawn out, but for a character who really emerged from the second tier to become a viewpoint character, it certainly has it's moments. Garzik's story is, by far, the darkest of the lot, with some really difficult scenes to watch him suffer through, although Daniells, quite mercifully, doesn't dwell on the details. Like Fyn, he's very much trapped between divided loyalties, and his growth over the course of the series is nothing short of remarkable.

After being physically separated and emotionally distanced from one another for so long, it was nice to see Byron and Orrade together again. I think Daniells may have tried a little too hard to restore their friendship, and to prove Byron was over his homophobia, but there's no denying that there's real power to that friendship. Their early scene involving a man overboard, a dead wyvern, and a very intimate sort of healing is one of the series' finest moments. As for Piro, her story was, for me, the weakest of the lot - but a lot of that likely has to do with the fact that I never found her to be a likable character, and didn't find her relationship with Siordun nearly as interesting once his true identity was out in the open.

That brings us, of course, to the ending. While Daniells did a solid job of wrapping up the key story threads, and providing a resolution to all of the key character arcs, I had honestly hoped for something a bit . . . well, happier and uplifting. There are certainly some triumphs to be celebrated, and some happy endings for a few characters, but the overall tone is rather melancholy and troubled. I think it's absolutely a strong ending (not to mention a brave one), and one that's entirely realistic, given the social and political realities of her world, but it was just a bit more gritty than I had hoped for.

My own minor quibbles aside, King Breaker was a solid, largely satisfying end to the saga. There's certainly room for Daniells to revisit the characters again, should she choose, but there are no cliffhangers or nagging questions like there were with The Usurper. If you're a fan of the series, then this final volume should be precisely what you're looking for. If you're new to the series, then step back and begin with The King's Bastard - you won't regret it.

Good author; great series

Good author, great series. However it does leave threads hanging. Only reason I didn't give her 5 stars. I also took issue with the one female "villan". I didn't find her story arc very believable. Maybe I'm being too picky, but I like logical decisions or to find a logical reason why something happens. I understand reacting emotionally but I just didn't believe her female villan.

It was 3 years since I read the first 3 books so that was not the best way to start, but I remembered the big points. That is the worst with waiting, but I still came back to the story pretty quickly.

Daniells have a way of making you despair. I mean those poor poor characters! When you think it will work out then another hurdle comes along. But then there is a lot of unhappy people in this world.

Byren is going to take his kingdom back (the kingdom he never wanted in the first place.) Poor Byren, he never catches a break. His brother Fyn is holding the neighboring kingdom for him and taking care of Byren's bride to be Queen Isolt. And Fyn wants Isolt for himself (think of the consequences man!) And then there is their sister Piro who was not as cool in this story for some reason. And the last POV is Garzik, the brother of Byren's friend.

Byren's POV is one of constant struggle and he is never happy. He needs to free his people and marry someone he does not want. I felt sorry for him to the bitter end.

Fyn's POV was good as he was in the middle of a bunch of idiots. Bickering lords are always fun to read about as I wanted to smack them all over the head. The political intrigue never stopped there.

Piro's POV was a bit... well it never took off. And lastly Garzik who is stuck with the Outlander pirates. There was always something going on there.

Conclusion:
This is a book of political intrigues, lots of fighting and strange magical beasts. It's also a dark book and a good ending to this series. A strange and at times evil world that was well put together.

loved that falling in love didn't mean he had to ...

For this book, it was the hero who kept me hooked. Confidence that definitely mingled with arrogance. Unabashedly forthcoming, yet still devious. Through it all, he manages to say and do elitist, condescending things, AND you're still Team Brax. Lastly, loved that falling in love didn't mean he had to change. One of the best "Arrogant Alpha Males" characters out there... mostly because we stay with Olivia (our heroine) and don't have to bare with "she's soft, she's small, she's mine, she's a brave little human" commentary. Ator'aq leaves NO misunderstandings.

Even with the HEA assurance by the author, I have to say that the Ethereals have been the scariest "bad guys" that I've encountered in the Alien Abduction stories . I attribute this to the "Jaws Effect". Yes, we need to kill the shark, but it's the mayor who's the obstacle. Ator'qa managed to be the obstacle and hero all at the same time. I definitely enjoyed the twist added to, what can be, a stock character.

Definitely recommend.

Ator'aq and Olivia

I received an Arc of this book for an honest review.
I love Sci-fi and romance, so I really enjoyed this book. Olivia is definitely a dedicated Space Marine, at times obsessively so. But since they are the first and last line of defense against an alien invasion intent on wiping out all humans, that does make sense. Ator'aq is the head of the Braxian force that has allied with us to help us fight. At first I wasn't very impressed with this story, especially the bar scene. Tessa, Olivia's sister, made an absolute fool of herself with Ator'aq and I don't think it was necessary to be that crude. Luckily it was better from there. In fact I definitely felt that the rest of the book flowed well. There are twists and turns that keep your interest. And once Ator'aq and Olivia (and their swords) get together it is well worth the wait. I found one inconsistency (honest review) and that with the bar scene lost one star, but I definitely recommend this book. Enjoy!

More a Lite Military SF than a Romance

The world building is the best part of this story, and it's the only part that feels fully realized. The tech and alien races are imaginative. However, beyond the sic-fi elements "Given to the Alien" is light on plot development, character development, and logic. It's also only about 20% romance. As another reviewer mentioned, the romance is alluded to as a "connection" but beyond internal monologues outlining how attractive the main pair finds each other, the love-line doesn't actually hit the page until the characters are having almost perfunctory sex (without kissing or foreplay). In the end we have no idea why or how the characters fell in love because the two of them, like their story, are sketches without any details filled in.

If you want a quick military sci-fi story that you'd watch one Saturday afternoon on SyFy, this might be a good time pass. But it you're looking for a sexy alien romance with memorable characters, this isn't the tale you're looking for.

3D printing explained well

I gave this book 5 stars because I enjoyed reading it. For me it explained all the aspects of 3D printing in one place which allowed me to become familiar with the techniques, language, engineering and applications of 3D printing in a weekend. After reading this book I am confident about getting into and purchasing a 3D printer.
My background is I am handy and computer literate. For me the information was straight forward and easy to comprehend. After reading this I think it will be similar to building a computer in the late 90s. Well maybe easier as the parts appear to be less proprietary. The author gave a very good break down of the build process over several chapters. I though it was well organized and provided good pictures and techniques of the 3D components. I haven't visited many sites or blogs on 3D printing so if you have been scouring the web for a few months you may have picked up the same general information as you will find in this book but because the authors have done this (make a 3D printer - also one is at the pinnacle of this technology ) I found their guidance to be exactly what I was looking for as a neophyte. I am no longer the neophyte I was 48 hours ago and can discuss arduino type boards from ramps to elefu-ra. Injectors like J-type, prusa and e3d and how the gear should be set up for feeding PLA or ABS.
If you would like an exploration both historical and technical into 3D printing and are going to buy or build a 3D printer as I am - read this book. This is the only book I will read on the subject after this I will dive into the 3D open source community. Hope this review helps you.

Just Finished!

I just finished building my own 3D Printer from a kit when this book finally arrived at my door. I read it in about 3 days, highlighting all the important (or at least, important areas to me).

This book helped me tremendously with calibrating my bed and extruder. Made Slic3r and Pronterface much more easy to understand and gave great tips on settings for different types of prints.

Seriously, a great book to have in your 3D printing collection.

A side note, this book does mention a bit about building 3D printers from kits. I built my Prusa i3 from the Makerfarm kit, which I was very surprised not to see mentioned in this book as it's an all-inclusive kit that really solves a lot of the guesswork. It's also a great way to learn the ins-and-outs of 3d printers so you can go on to build your own.

A good book if you want to build their favorite type of 3D printer

Although there is a good intro to the principles of 3D printing, it seems like a major portion of this book deals with building a RepRap 3D printer. Much of the industry seems to be ignored, but then this technology is growing so quickly, it would be hard to keep up in print. Maybe they should have added "RepRap" to the title. No mention of 3D Systems, a major player in all levels of 3D printing, and only one paragraph (and no photos) on the very popular MakerBot 3D printers.
