Needed a lot more polish and vision

There are probably some gems scattered within the text of this book, but they are hard to find. The book is a collection of contributions from various consultants. You know how it goes . . . "shopper marketing" is a hot topic right now, just like "customer relationship management" was at one point, so consultants rush to re-label whatever they are doing so that it fits under the hot topic.
There seems to have been little quality control, beyond copyediting, and not much in the way of a unifying vision. If you really want to learn about "shopper marketing," like I did, you probably won't learn much from this volume. Even the section headed, "What is Shopper Marketing?" doesn't actually define shopper marketing. Overall, this volume was really a disapointment to me.

About the Author
Thomas H. Davenport is the President’s Distinguished Chair at Babson College and a research fellow at the MIT Center for Digital Business. He is also a senior advisor to Deloitte Analytics and the cofounder and research director of the International Institute for Analytics. Davenport is the coauthor of Competing on Analytics and Analytics at Work. This is the seventeenth book he has authored, coauthored, or edited.

Jinho Kim is a professor of business and statistics at the Korea National Defense University and the research director of the KNDU Lab for Analytics Research. He holds a PhD from the Wharton School and is the author of six books published in Korea, including the bestselling 100 Common Senses in Statistics and Freak Statistics. He has developed and run an educational program for building individuals’ analytical skills. His current research focuses on the use of analytical methods to address various issues in business and society.

Basic, non-technical

I had a little trouble understanding who the authors had in mind as the audience for this book. It seemed to basic for any professional who would have to deal with statistics/data or would have to manage/collaborate with someone who does.

There are some helpful reminders throughout about how to approach problems and how to communicate your ideas. But the authors seem seem to replace depth with a multiplicity of business-y anecdotes (ironic, as they include the old chestnut "the plural of anecdote is not data" - the plural of anecdote, it so happens, is not "a book").

Overall, the book feels superficial. It might inform you how to probe an analyst on first-level questions, but doesn't provide enough depth to take you through a couple follow-ups or know when you're getting snowed.

I loved the style of the authors regarding the basic concepts BUT the examples and stories they tried to relate to... oh my, they were not good. I've had some experience with numbers in my work and this book was for my MBA program. Therefore, I'm not a novice but the book made a point about relating stories to numbers and how effective it is (I agree, of course) but the stories this book tried to tie in were off the mark most of the time. That being said, there are so many good parts of the book to help you develop your quant brain.

As a management professor I keep reading all sorts of books. This book is a nice introduction to Quants for people who are afraid of numbers and data. It is written in simple language and analytic concepts are explained well for non-data people. A good introductory book if you are looking to acquaint yourself with the analytics world!

He did it his way! In the grand Italian tradition of hard work and the strength of a close Italian family, Pat Franchi charted his life’s course and never looked back. And now, he has penned a memoir for his friends, family and fans across the world, that shares just how he did it, time and time and time again. Pat walks us through a wonderfully simple autobiography from his birth to a loving, hard-working family in Gallinaro, Italy to making the trek to America not speaking a word of English, to growing up in Newton, Massachusetts under the guidance of a mother whose laser focus was on securing her family’s health, education and prosperous future in a new country. Eventually, Pat begins his own family and goals in life guided by the principles that made him the decent, caring, smart businessman that he became. From his wife, sadly with him too short a time, to his children, of whom he is so proud, to raising them as a single father after the too early death of his wife, to his national and international business expansion, Pat did it his way.

Great reading

I never read books but I made the exception. I couldn't put it down, I read the whole book in one night, then I read it again. A true gentleman. And a pioneer in life.just goes to show you if you work hard and be true to your family and friends you will be rewarded in longevity and see your dreams forfilled, I highly recommend this book. Not just because he's my boss.

Kevin Howard Goldberg has been working with computers since 1976 when he taught himself BASIC on his elementary school’s PDP 11/70. Since then, Kevin’s career has included management consulting, lead software development and in his current capacity,� he runs technology operations for a world-class Internet Strategy, Marketing and Development company.

Kevin holds a bachelor’s degree in Economics and Entrepreneurial Management from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania, and is a candidate for a master’s degree in Computer Science at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Finally! A GOOD Beginners Guide to XML that Delivers

Truth be told, I do not work as a Web developer, but on a daily basis my job has me in contact with business clients and Web application developers. My clients require robust Web applications, my developers make it happen. Because of legacy data issues, shared disparate databases, and the need for them to handshake; XML Web services have become a standard solution in many commercial Web solutions. Though I am somewhat familiar with the basics of XML I wanted to go deeper to better myself and better my knowledge in client/tech conversations. What I did not want to do is to go so deep as to read a monster 1000+ page tome that would require weeks of book study, application and befuddlement.

Instead, Mr. Goldberg's book provided me a concise break down the structure of XML markup language in a detailed/digestible enough manner to keep me engaged and participatory. Each chapter cleverly builds on previous topics, so as to provide a pyramid learning approach. This enabled me to go deeper than before into the more arcane areas of the language (XPath patterns, functions, expressions, XSL-FO, DTD's, schemas, etc.) so it could be more easily understood.

If you are new to XML, curious, or need enough to know to be dangerous in your job, then this book is for you. BTW, I highly recommend that you download his chapter samples so as to follow along and to tinker with. I read the entire book in a weekend and returned to work on Monday loaded for bear. Now I keep it at my desk for easy reference.

Excellent book on XML

XML: Visual QuickStart Guide (2nd Edition)

I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to learn the basics of XML.

I have about an intermediate level of HTML acumen and wanted a book that would cover enough of the rudiments to get a good grasp of the subject. It does that, as well as cover a myriad of related apps such as XPath, XSLT, and XQuery.

I also really appreciated the comprehensible instructions, visual examples, recommended tools, and the applications that give XML its currency in the real world.

All in all, an excellent source.

Good book for beginners.

This is a good book. I would highly recommend that you have some experience with HTML prior to reading it, I hadn't looked into HTML for a while (10 years) and so it was an extremely hypothetical reading. Had I caught up on my HTML first I am certain I would have got even more out of it.

In any case the examples are easy to follow, the author does a great job of breaking things down into nice digestible chunks. If you're looking to take your XML to the next level this is not the book for you, if you are however looking for a solid foundation to build from I would certainly recommend this book without hesitation.
