The book's effective design consists of verses in vertical columns at the left of each spread, with the remainder occupied by Locker's ( Family Farm ; Catskill Eagle ) typically lush artwork. His oil paintings are eye-catching in their depth of color reflecting dramatic seasonal changes. Trees, skies and woodland creatures are rendered in vivid hues that combine to produce an enthralling vision. Kindergarten-Grade 4-- The book opens with an Abenaki storyteller explaining to his grandson that just as there are always 13 scales on ``Old Turtle's back,'' there are 13 moons in a year, each of which has a name and a story. The poetic tales and corresponding paintings that follow represent myths or legends of different Native American tribes. Although the language of these poems is not particularly memorable or childlike, it does evoke images and passes on some of the traditions of the native people and their closeness to the natural world. The cadence is that of an adult explaining things to a child. Both text and illustrations have a distancing effect on readers. Locker's large, dark paintings stand parallel to or in tandem with the poems but are not integral to them. They create a mood and capture portions of the text, encouraging viewers to look ``at'' rather than ``into'' these images. There is a sense of vastness in these paintings, and sometimes a harshness, but little of the lushness or the warmth of the land. Although the cover illustration of the turtle is inviting and the large format attractive, these are poems that will probably not entice most youngsters on their own. They can be appreciated, however, when presented by an adult and will be a welcome addition to units on Native American cultures. --Kay E. From a velvety moonlit wetland scene in ``Big Moon'' to the glory of a deciduous forest in the ``Moon of Falling Leaves,'' Locker once again proves himself a gifted landscape artist. In illustrating this Native American lunar calendar, he makes forays beyond the Hudson River valley to the lands of the Lakota and Northern Cheyenne, Cherokee and Huron, Abenaki, Cree, and more, catching the seasons in light, clouds, trees, and wildlife. As in his other books, human and animal figures are rather awkward intrusions, with some exceptions--notably a huge, four-square moose in ``Frog Moon.'' Folklorist Bruchac and poet London work together on brief, dignified retellings of Native American legends for the accompanying text, properly pointing out in an afterword that tribes in different areas see different seasonal patterns and hold different beliefs. Traditional View of Seasonal meanings

This book is an excellent work of Native American children's literature. Joseph Bruchac is a well-known Abenaki story-teller who profiles in this book the thirteen moons of the year, and profiles for each moon what is important about that season to different Native Nations. The artwork is a beautiful compliment to the story. If you are looking for a solid and sensitive look at inter-tribal stories for children, this is a great place to start!

I was fortunate to hear the author speak in the early 90s in my hometown of Syracuse, NY. He is an engaging storyteller. It was then that I discovered his book. The artwork in this edition is rich and appealing. The vignettes of each moon, combined with the illustrations, make an appealing canvas for young and/or exploring minds.

What a treat to find these two books in one volume! A Clive Barker's fan very pleased.

Wow! What a treat it is to get two books by my favorite author Clive Barker in one volume. Have always loved Weaveworld since it was first published after Barker's awesome Damnation Game. And to have it together in a compact form with Cabal, it is awesome! This hard to find book from UK is pure joy to us fans. You would expect this book to be heavy and thick, but it is not heavy at all. I don't know how the publisher did it, but it weighs (or feels) lighter than a regular book. Would love to see more Clive Barker volumes from this publisher. The copy I got is well worn but I expect that from being from the great imagination of Mr. Barker (a well read book is definately a compliment to the author of the book).
Since first reading his Books of Blood, In The Flesh, and Inhuman Condition, I was hooked on this author. Brilliant storyteller indeed. He blows away anything King could ever write. Brilliant!!
Get this hard to find volume of Barker's early works before it goes out of circulation.
You will not be disappointed!

2 Good books in 1!

After reading The Damnation Game I was very excited to read this the entire way though. If you like fantasty you will probably like Weaveworld. An interesting story but it did not grip me right away, I felt like I had to really push myself to read it. Is it a bad book? No. Does it take awhile to get good? I would say yes. Cabal is short but good. I would say this is not the first Clive Barker book I would read though, this I would argue is for more of the big fans.

I love Weaveworld, and haven't read Cabal yet, was happy to find these two works together. I am a Clive Barker fan, and Weaveworld is another one of his thought-provoking novels. I haven't read Cabal yet, as I am enjoying reading Weaveworld first. If you like the idea of worlds within worlds, you will love Weaveworld!

Good book for learning environmental biotechnology concepts

The book arrived in a timely manner. I've only read over the first two chapters, and our professor hasn't really used it yet for any assignments in class. However, it seems decent enough to learn about needed environmental technology concepts. I found the first two chapters gave very thorough detail, so whatever depth of material you would use in class, this text should be fine.

Wibbeke is breaking new grounds in multicultural leadership addressing the American leaders posted abroad in the Globalization era. i liked the book and wait for the new version. It adds to this library new insights: the 7 Cs (pun intended or unintended) "care, capabilitity, change, contrast, context, conscientiousness, communication". with many interviews to top executives in the field.
Any person posted abroad shuld read it and i suggest to add it to the Foreign Service reading list.

Fiction? Really?

From time to time, I come across a work of fiction that is so obviously written by someone who has experience with the subject matter as to make it come alive. The Beloved Daughter is one such book.

Most of what I know of the conditions in North Korea in general, and for believers specifically, is in small bits and pieces from various missionary organizations. I've never doubted what they described, though it's hard to grasp how inhumane humans can be to one another when you only read a paragraph here and there. Likewise with how irrational people can be simply because of the name of Jesus.

Alana Terry has written a masterpiece that puts life in perspective in North Korea. That takes me out of the safety of my US life and transports me into the prisons where my brothers and sisters in Christ survive, somehow - or not. It also puts "free" life for Christians in North Korea in perspective. The constant observation of surroundings and suspicious people, the need for places to hide even in the home, to distrust even those people closest to you.

Because of Alana Terry's book, The Beloved Daughter, I will no longer be so blase when I hear of prisoners in NK, or of torture of one of my brothers or sisters there. I've "seen" the conditions in those prisons. I don't know how they survive at all. Prayer will be more than a simple "Bless them" from this time on. Thank you, Alana, for painting this picture for me and for all who will read and let it affect them so profoundly.

Beautiful and Tragic

This book really hits home for me. Because I'm half Korean, (My mother was born near Seoul) I had a certain level of intimacy with the characters, so that even the names sounded familiar to me. And this made me especially sensitive to the abuse and torture of the characters and their horrid situations.

Abuse of Christians in North Korea is a current situation, not something off in the distant past. It's reality today. The author does a phenomenal job of making their plight a reality for readers who are completely clueless to the struggle of the underground church.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED - but have tissues handy.

Not of faith? Read it anyway. You won't regret it.

I received my copy of "The Beloved Daughter" yesterday and.... read the entire thing yesterday. I really enjoyed the story line as well as how the different characters were connected. It is easy to forget this story is set in modern days and not centuries ago with all the horrific things that happened to the characters (if you haven't read this story - I promise it isn't all bad - there are great messages of love and perseverance). It certainly opens one's eyes to what goes on in our world. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to learn about it. I did not find the character's names confusing because most characters are only in the novel for a short time and each in a unique situation (all revolving around one main character). Although not a long book, it covers so much. Religious persecution is very much alive today and this book reminds us of how it happens behind closed doors. A must read (with a box of tissues). Even if you are not a person of faith, this book will still speak to you about love and compassion.
