Spyros Themelis is Lecturer in Education at Middlesex University, UK. His publications adopt a critical perspective on issues of education and meritocracy, social mobility, Roma/Gypsy/Travellers and minorities, and social and educational policy. He has published in various journals, including the British Journal of Sociology of Education, Journal of Youth Studies, Research in Comparative and International Education, and Romani Studies.

This set of five essays stems from the 1994 Royal Institute Christmas Lectures, filmed and later televised by the BBC. Greenfield, a science writer and professor of pharmacology at Lincoln College in Oxford, presents a survey of the brain that is intended for a general adult readership. Offering both a "top-down" and "bottom-up" approach, Greenfield examines movement and vision to illustrate how various brain functions might be localized, and she describes how neurons communicate and how this activity can be modified by drugs. She also discusses the development of the human brain from conception to birth and speculates on how experience can modify this brain to create a unique individual. Finally, in her explanation of how memory is laid down, the author touches on a physical basis for the mind. Greenfield presents a number of sophisticated concepts in a lively and very comprehensible style. For the lay reader, a British scientist offers an enlightening look at the human brain and mind, clarifying what researchers now know and what difficult and tantalizing questions they are still struggling to answer. In 1994, Greenfield (Pharmacology/Oxford) was asked to give the Royal Institution Christmas Lectures, a popular series aimed at teenagers and broadcast by the BBC. This book, which is aimed at adult readers, derives from that series. In it, the author approaches the brain first as a physical object, exploring its different regions, and then examining certain functions, specifically movement and vision, to demonstrate how these are carried out by the different regions engaging in a kind of ``balanced dialogue.'' Greenfield then shifts her approach and tackles the brain from a cellular level. She begins with a single neuron and explains how the brain is built in increasingly complex circuits. She shows how neurons communicate with each other chemically and how this communication is affected by mood-altering drugs such as nicotine, morphine and its derivative heroin, cocaine, and ecstasy. She next turns to the development of the brain from the beginning of life, showing how its neuronal circuitry constantly changes as a result of experience, and tackling the issue of when consciousness arises. In her final chapter she considers the various kinds of memory, raising tough questions about the relationship of brain to mind. Happily for the reader, Greenfield, who recently began giving free public lectures on the brain in the City of London, has developed a keen sense of what curious nonscientists want to know and, equally important, how to impart scientific information with verve and clarity. About the Author
Susan Greenfield has held fellowships in the Department of Physiology, Oxford; the College de France, Paris and NYU Medical Center, New York. The title of Professor of Pharmacology was conferred in 1996. She became Director of The Royal Institution of Great Britain in 1998. She heads a group of 18 scientists studying Parkinson's and Alzheimer's Disease, and developed an interest in the physical basis of the mind. She published her own theory of consciousness Journey to the Centres of the Mind and Ego: The Neuroscience of the Self. In 1994 she was the first woman to give the Royal Institution Christmas lectures. She recently authored The Human Brain: A Guided Tour which was published as paperback in 1998. She was included as one of the 50 most powerful women in Britain by the Guardian and ranked number 14 in the "50 Most Inspirational Women in the World" by Harpers and Queen. She has recently received the Michael Faraday medal from the Royal Society for making the most significant contribution in 1998 to the public understanding of science, as well as receiving the "Woman of Distinction" 1998 award from Jewish Care. In January 2000 she was awarded the CBE for her services to the public understanding of science.

52% what I purchased, 48% teaser for the next book. Color me disappointed.

I read the Archer Brothers series as a break in my normal fare of medieval historical fiction/ time-travel. The first installment hooked me from the beginning. I loved the hard working, loyal, caring Archer boys! The second was as good, and I anxiously awaited youngest brother Neill's story. As I purchased the book, I was disappointed that it was a novella, but desired to "catch up on the family," and have closure on the series. I must say that I enjoyed as much story as was given, however, half of a novella isn't much of a story. I was so disappointed when part of the family gathered at the ranch as Clara and her son's safety was assured, but the ending was definitely abrupt and hurried. At 58% of what I purchased, the saga suddenly ended, and I was left with Witemeyer's remaining 42% as a pitch for her next novel! Six chapters just to get more of my money. If you tend to business and give the customer a well-written, complete story, you don't have to worry about offering the teaser on their dime. Ummm...yeah...I feel cheated.

Too short!

A good third book to the series but we were shortchanged because of her so called novella. She wanted to "introduce" a new series instead of trusting her fans to read other books she had written. I'm disappointed in the way authors and publishers treat customers nowadays.
Her writing is great but I turned the page and there was the ending! I was like? Where is the rest of the story?

Incredibly Tender Love Story

A Cowboy Unmatched features the youngest Archer brother (Neill) and a young widow who surprises him at every turn and thoroughly lassos his heart in no time flat. The love story is incredibly tender, as independent, outcast Clara finds herself wooed by protective, understanding, and gentlemanly Neill. Throw in a figure from Clara's past who poses a threat to Neill and Clara's future, add in some brief appearances and mentions of the older Archer brothers and their families, and you've got another engaging Witemeyer read that offers a sweet ending to the Archer tales!

Not bad for extra practice, but does not contain Real SAT questions or trustworthy score conversions.

I'm a Harvard graduate, SAT perfect scorer and professional SAT tutor with 18 years of experience. Disclaimer: way back when, I used to teach and tutor the SAT for the Princeton Review.

This book is OK for extra practice if you've run out of official practice SATs--the answer explanations are more detailed than others I have seen, and the questions are mostly realistic. However, it's important to realize that the tests in this book are not real SATs. The only book with real, updated SATs is the Official SAT Study Guide, of which I have written an exhaustive customer review (currently the first one on the top): Official SAT Study Guide (2016 Edition) (Official Study Guide for the New Sat) Thus, the "score conversions" provided are simply Princeton's best guess, and cannot be trusted because the SATs contained within are not authentic.

Here are my top recommendations for synthetic SAT practice tests:

1) Ivy Global: Ivy Global's New SAT Guide, 2nd Edition
2) Barron's: Barron's 6 Practice Tests for the NEW SAT, 2nd Edition
3) This Book
4) Kaplan: 8 Practice Tests for the SAT 2017: 1,200+ SAT Practice Questions (Kaplan Test Prep)

If you've run out of official SAT practice tests, then allow me to make an alternate suggestion: switch to ACT prep! Typos and errata galore!

This could have been a pretty good book if it weren't for the plethora of typos, missed "ed's" and "ing's"and so many other mistakes! It was very distracting. I actually spent a good deal of time looking for a way to contact the author. I'm sure she would be mortified. I hope so anyway! Seriously needs to get a better editor. I suspect that whoever proofed this didn't actually read it, just hit spell check. I read this on Kindle, maybe that's the problem!
