A MUST have if you plan on taking the Class A exam!

Just took my Class A contractors exam and this book was a HUGE help!! I took an online class and highlighted in the book as I went along. Most of the items were easy to find when I needed to skim through to find an answer. I do wish the glossary was more in depth and referenced a page number but I was able to manage. I passed all 3 tests the first try!

Solid, Accurate Transcriptions of Great Performances

Of course, I'm an amateur, so I can't play everything in the book as written. However, everything I've played (or read while listening to the music) is accurate, and includes notation for bends, palm key usage, etc.

There are about 20 or more songs in this collection. A few are from the Billie Holiday recordings. Many more are from "Complete Decca Recordings" of Count Basie and "The Complete Aladdin Recordings" of Lester Young. If you own these two collections, you will have the recordings of over half the songs in this book.

I also have the Coleman Hawkins Collection from this publisher. Most of it is WAY beyond my abilities right now. Much of this material is, too, but it seems more attainable.

Fortunately I have recordings of most of these transcriptions and after multiple listenings I can attest to
the accuracy of the notations. This is a tenor player's dream book, not to copy Prez note for note, but to
actually see his brilliance as an improviser on paper.

About the Author

Thom Holmes is a composer and music historian. He studied composition with Paul Epstein in Philadelphia, was the long-time publisher of the magazine Recordings of Experimental Music (1979-1985), and worked with John Cage.

A high-quality textbook on electronic music

Thom Holmes's third edition of this book is divided into four parts: a history of electronic music up to 1960; an explanation of the techniques and tools used in analog synthesis; a discussion of the principles and techniques behind digital synthesis; and an exploration of various genres of electronic music. Because this book is a textbook, the coverage of what Holmes chooses to discuss is admirably thorough. However, because it is a textbook, meant for use in the college classroom, Holmes focuses almost entirely on non-popular music, i.e. "classical" and experimental music. There is only one chapter on electronic popular music, and it seems to me the one he spent the least amount of time updating. It's hard to write about electronic popular music without discussing electronic dance music, yet, apart from a sidebar featuring Gary Numan (!), Holmes manages to do it. Holmes focuses exclusively on "avant-garde" popular music in this chapter, and while that's understandable and perhaps acceptable for a college textbook, it's also a little misleading as far as gaining an understanding of electronic music in general is concerned. Despite these points, this is a very well-written book and a solid introduction to electronic music.

Current and concise.

If you are at all concerned about the quality of the nutritional supplement / multivitamin that you currently take or you are looking for a high quality multivitamin, then, I highly suggest this book. Its current and up to date. the information that I have found in this book to be accurate and concise. Easy to read and very informative. its a must have book.

Changed my way of thinking about supplements

Saw the author of this book on Dr. Oz and was real curious about whether or not the supplements I'm taking are quality products. The book has great information about the purpose of many supplements and how they work in your body, in terms that I could understand; then there are ratings for tons of manufacturers and the supplements they make. For some of my supplements, I just buy what's on sale, so I found that some of the less expensive things I'm buying are really low quality. Changed my way of thinking and I'm going to actively look for the manufacturers that are making quality products. Liked the layout of the book and found it easy to read; I wouldn't hesitate to recommend to anyone who takes supplements and is interested in educating themselves in what to consider taking and who to buy from.

Chapter 7 has been rewritten almost completely; the section on formal grammars has been reduced, the sections on production systems, semantic networks, and knowledge acquisition have been expanded, and sections on logic and explanation added. The old Chaps. 8 and 9 have been omitted. In summary, the new edition is a thorough revision and extensive update of the first one taking into account the progress in the field during recent years.

This set of five essays stems from the 1994 Royal Institute Christmas Lectures, filmed and later televised by the BBC. Greenfield, a science writer and professor of pharmacology at Lincoln College in Oxford, presents a survey of the brain that is intended for a general adult readership. Offering both a "top-down" and "bottom-up" approach, Greenfield examines movement and vision to illustrate how various brain functions might be localized, and she describes how neurons communicate and how this activity can be modified by drugs. She also discusses the development of the human brain from conception to birth and speculates on how experience can modify this brain to create a unique individual. Finally, in her explanation of how memory is laid down, the author touches on a physical basis for the mind. Greenfield presents a number of sophisticated concepts in a lively and very comprehensible style. For the lay reader, a British scientist offers an enlightening look at the human brain and mind, clarifying what researchers now know and what difficult and tantalizing questions they are still struggling to answer. In 1994, Greenfield (Pharmacology/Oxford) was asked to give the Royal Institution Christmas Lectures, a popular series aimed at teenagers and broadcast by the BBC. This book, which is aimed at adult readers, derives from that series. In it, the author approaches the brain first as a physical object, exploring its different regions, and then examining certain functions, specifically movement and vision, to demonstrate how these are carried out by the different regions engaging in a kind of ``balanced dialogue.'' Greenfield then shifts her approach and tackles the brain from a cellular level. She begins with a single neuron and explains how the brain is built in increasingly complex circuits. She shows how neurons communicate with each other chemically and how this communication is affected by mood-altering drugs such as nicotine, morphine and its derivative heroin, cocaine, and ecstasy. She next turns to the development of the brain from the beginning of life, showing how its neuronal circuitry constantly changes as a result of experience, and tackling the issue of when consciousness arises. In her final chapter she considers the various kinds of memory, raising tough questions about the relationship of brain to mind. Happily for the reader, Greenfield, who recently began giving free public lectures on the brain in the City of London, has developed a keen sense of what curious nonscientists want to know and, equally important, how to impart scientific information with verve and clarity. About the Author
Susan Greenfield has held fellowships in the Department of Physiology, Oxford; the College de France, Paris and NYU Medical Center, New York. The title of Professor of Pharmacology was conferred in 1996. She became Director of The Royal Institution of Great Britain in 1998. She heads a group of 18 scientists studying Parkinson's and Alzheimer's Disease, and developed an interest in the physical basis of the mind. She published her own theory of consciousness Journey to the Centres of the Mind and Ego: The Neuroscience of the Self. In 1994 she was the first woman to give the Royal Institution Christmas lectures. She recently authored The Human Brain: A Guided Tour which was published as paperback in 1998. She was included as one of the 50 most powerful women in Britain by the Guardian and ranked number 14 in the "50 Most Inspirational Women in the World" by Harpers and Queen. She has recently received the Michael Faraday medal from the Royal Society for making the most significant contribution in 1998 to the public understanding of science, as well as receiving the "Woman of Distinction" 1998 award from Jewish Care. In January 2000 she was awarded the CBE for her services to the public understanding of science.
