Dr. Ralph Mann is a pioneer in conducting sports research, and using these results to produce computer-based teaching technology. An authority in the field of Sport Biomechanics, Dr. Mann has become a leader in analyzing the performance of top amateur and professional athletes.

A world class Track athlete himself, Dr. Mann won 5 national championships and 3 collegiate championships in the hurdles. He set the world record in the intermediate hurdles, was ranked number one in the world numerous times, and won several international titles. In the Munich Games, he won the Olympic Silver Medal in the 400 Meter Hurdles. In 2015 he was elected to the USA Track and Field Hall of Fame.

In 1982, Dr. Mann was one of the six individuals that created the Elite Athlete Program that brought sports science to USA Track and Field. Since that time, he has served as the Director of the Elite Athlete Sprint and Hurdle Program. Essentially every elite sprinter and hurdler during this time period has been biomechanically analyzed, with the goal of understanding the characteristics of great sprinters and hurdlers. This information has been used to evaluate and improve the performance of virtually every US sprint/hurdle athlete since the program's inception. This book contains the findings of this unique effort.

This updated 2015 edition contains over 70 additional pages covering new information on both the Start and Full Speed mechanics. In the Hurdles, research on the Steps between the barriers for both the Short and Long races has been added, as well as ground breaking information on how Hurdle Technique should be taught.

Fits with my experience.

From an academic perspective the book could include some of the statistical analysis rather than just averages, range and standard deviations would have helped me. Still I can accept that the variations are mentioned. I may not quite fit the target audience. That said the information and the conclusions were very useful to me. "Modern" Coaching manuals in Australia advocate a foot placement under the COG, quite at odds with the experience of those of us who could actually sprint. The emphasis on front end mechanics should now start to sink in. Australia has a lot of good young athletes, because they strike such a range of Coaches they are very confused young people. Great technical approach to the sprints and hurdling training component

Dr. Mann has always been a highly sought after clinician in terms of his ability to breakdown event specific physiological application and explain it scientifically. It is a highly technical read and not intended for the beginning or novice student of sprint mechanics. But, if you are anticipating expanding your knowledge in this area, I would definitely recommend this book as a reference and allow it to be at your disposal until you are ready for it.

This book is excellent not only for identifying proper body positions for efficient sprinting, but for giving purpose for those positions. Great book for understanding the sprints, track and field, hurdles, and more.

If you are going to study Gaelic - and I recommend you do! - then this book is an excellent choice. I first bought the Kindle version. Now, I love my Kindle, but reading this book is best done with a hard copy in your hand and with the CD present.

Commenting on the book WITH CD, and you would be hard pressed to find a better beginning book. The lessons are graded appropriately for the level of learning, the material is appropriate and interesting, and with the assistance of the CD, you should be able to get a good grasp of the language in a few months. Using this book you will find that you need to skim back and forth to refresh your memory. You will be asked to check out the appropriate passage on the CD. This mixed media approach can be a boost for your memory, and I heartily recommend using the CD too.

Now to the Kindle version. I was unable to get the CD for download. It may be out there somewhere, but I could not find it. I also very quickly found that moving back and forth in the e-book was not easy, and that made my experience less successful. You can do it, the book is all there and it is an excellent book. In my experience though, as a lover of e-book format, you would be better advised to buy the hard copy version with the CD.

Same as Teach Yourself Gaelic

I was going to buy this, but then I compared the first chapter to "Teach Yourself Gaelic" which came out a number of years ago. The text is exactly the same in the first chapter. So if you have that book and CDs or cassettes, this appears to be the same. The Teach Yourself Gaelic book and CDs can often be found at the library if you prefer to give it a try before you buy. I find the book an excellent addition to the others that I have. Each book has its own strengths and weaknesses, so if you want to learn the language, you will probably find yourself buying more that one to get a different presentation.
