Not for the layman

Shalit's work is written specifically for psychology and military professionals. His detailed categorization and impulse to construct word formulas can be tough to wade through. It is also quite old, published in 1988.

From the title, I was hoping for a more comprehensive look at psychological issues within and surrounding conflict and combat. Instead, it was focused heavily on detailing and categorizing the types of aggression, while analyzing their value in producing effective soldiers and units.

Shalit does take an interesting look at the process of coping and provides some interesting statistics on Israeli soldiers' differing attitudes towards Syria/Egypt/Jordan - including former POWs' attitudes of each army. But in the end, none of this is really enough to make the book worthwhile.

He thus rushed his army south to defend the city. Washington guessed correctly, but it would be to no avail. Unlike Boston, New York City's terrain featured few defensible positions. The city lacked a high point from which to launch a siege, as the peninsula of Boston was fortunate to have. Moreover, Washington wasn't sure defending the city was necessary, hoping that an expedition launched toward Quebec like the one Benedict Arnold had led in late 1775 would keep the British away from New York anyway. However, Congress thought otherwise, and demanded that Washington defend New York. Washington thus did what he was told, and it nearly resulted in the army’s demise. In the summer of 1776, the British conducted the largest amphibious expedition in North America’s history at the time, landing over 20,000 troops on Long Island. British General William Howe, who had led the British at Bunker Hill and would later become commander in chief of the armies in North America, easily captured Staten Island, which Washington was incapable of defending without a proper navy. Washington’s army attempted to fight, but Washington was badly outmaneuvered, and his army was nearly cut off from escape. The withdrawal across New York City was enormously disorderly, with many of Washington's troops so scared that they deserted. Others were sick as a result of the dysentery and smallpox plaguing the Continental Army in New York. In what was arguably the worst defeat of the Revolution, Washington was ashamed, and he also felt betrayed, by both his troops and Congress. To escape from New York, Washington led a tactical retreat across the East River and off Long Island in the middle of the night without British knowledge. This retreat prevented the annihilation of the colonial army in New York, but with Washington being pushed west across New Jersey and into Pennsylvania, Congress was forced to flee Philadelphia. And with this string of crucial British successes in 1776, the Revolution was on the brink of failure. The Continental Army, now in Pennsylvania, had lost over 5,000 men during its retreat through New York and New Jersey and now had fewer than 5,000 able soldiers. That winter, one of the men in camp, Thomas Paine, would write The American Crisis, beginning with the famous words, “These are the times that try men’s souls.” However, Washington would famously cross the Delaware River on Christmas night to attack British forces at Trenton, and he was able to compel the British to suspend the winter campaign after fighting around Princeton. Nonetheless, in the early months of 1777, the colonists were in dire straits and the British were plotting a campaign in the coming months to put down the revolution once and for all. Pretty good synopsis of that otherwise

Washington crossing the Delaware was an after thought. Book was really the battle of New York. Pretty good synopsis of that otherwise. The fight in New Jersey was almost left completely out. No synopsis of that battle so skimpy it should have not been mentioned.

A masterpice written by Mlalazi. Simple, flowing language. Should be read by all intrested in contemporary African literature. At times history, when seen from the innocent eye can be heartbreaking. But the truth comes out in such an innocent but painful way. Mlalazi has managed to do that.

He made me think of how incredibly difficult it was for certain ethnic groups to simply go about their everyday work and lives without falling foul of the dreaded "red" beret force. About the Author
Ruti Yudovich, a graduate of the University of Ben Gurion, has over 35 years of experience in teaching Biblical and Modern Hebrew to both children and adults. Her teaching career began in Beit Brodetzky, a prestigious ulpan, (an institute for the intensive study of Hebrew, designed to teach adult immigrants to Israel the basic language skills of conversation, writing and comprehension) and continued in Southern California, at the University of Judaism (now AJU), where she taught Modern and Biblical Hebrew, synagogues, Jewish schools and privately. FINALLY A BOOK FOR ALL THAT HAS IT ALL!

Finally a book that has it ALL! Clear explanation so that anybody can learn it on his own. A unique way to know if you read a word correctly or not. Short and sweet explanations of Jewish terms. My son LOVED the exercises in the book and the repetition. He was eager to move from one chapter to the next without my help and not before long he read words with ease and excitement. I can't say enough about this book that my brother bought for my son. You are not only learning HOW to read Hebrew but you gain knowledge of Judaism and a taste and flavor of spoken Hebrew. We also received: Speak Hebrew for Real and I can hear my son speaking phrases and now he is willing to talk to me in my native language. Ruti Yudovich did an incredible job with this book. I can tell she is an experienced teacher who generously shared her knowledge with us. This book saved me a LOT of money on private tutors. Ruti Yudovich also included blessings and prayers that are requirements for Bar or Bat Mitzvah. What a treasure. I recommend this book to anybody, no matter of age, who is interested in learning how to read Hebrew. I recommend it to any tutor who can use it as his/her text book and of course to any teacher in any school. Thank you Ruti for your wonderful creation.

He found it very easy to follow and learn

My son used this book along, with the primer, to prepare for his bar mitzvah. He found it very easy to follow and learn, even though he hadn't attended Hebrew school. The author does a terrific job of color coding and systematizing the instruction in order to enhance pattern recognition and phonic assimilation. Highly recommend!

I am a Sabra, so Hebrew comes with the territory for me. My girlfriend however is not. It was quite frustrating for me and her, particularly before a trip to Israel. So bringing her up to some ability in reading Hebrew is a point of independence in a foreign land.
We tried a number of recommended approaches but did not go very far. When I stumbled on this book it was an eye opener. This book flows like a kid learning a new skill.
For the first time I see that we are going places with this.
