There is always a need to motivate and inspire those whom we count on to inspire our children. If the author is able to illustrate this through examples, humor and warmth-I think this will be most valuable. One can never have too much motivation.

The material seems to be organized in a logical manner. I think the case studies always help people to identify better and they are then more likely to use the techniques or information outlined. Im confident that case studies that have been taken from actual incidents will be universal to all those in this industry and easy to relate to.

From what I can see in the outline, this looks like a very thorough and relevant resource for early childhood education. Most Center Directors or management either use nothing or use something more suited to the outside business world and many applications do not apply to childcare. I think this resource would be very beneficial to them.

The authors writing style was clear and concise. It is appropriate for the audience and keeps the readers attention. I enjoyed the writing style.

About the Author
Lynn R. Marotz, Ph.D., R.N., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Human Development and Family Life at the University of Kansas. She also serves as the Associate Director of the university's Child Development Center. Ms. Marotz is co-chair of the Higher Education Consortium on Early Childhood Education. She is a member of the Stakeholder's Advisory Committee/Early Childhood Council, Kansas State Board of Education. She is also a member of the Kansas Early Care and Education Professional Development Initiative, as well as a member of the Early Childhood Professional Preparation Initiative. She is a council member for the Gateway's to Early Childhood Careers Project and serves as a board member for the Douglas County Child Development Association (NAEYC Affiliate). In 1998, she was a visiting scholar at Arizona State University and is a former finalist for University Employee of the Year (1997).

Amy Lawson is the Director of Child Care Services at the Seay Child Care Center of Presbyterian Hospital at Plano. She holds a B.A. in Human Development and Family/Early Childhood Education.

Great book.... but deceptively marketed!

Okay, based only on the contents, I would definitely give this book five stars. I'm subtracting a star, however, for its mis-marketing and mislabeling. It is marketed as a beginning/intermediate workbook. And it's just not. The contents are actually more appropriate for high intermediate or advanced students of Spanish, I would say.

The book is interesting in that it covers many of the more sophisticated topics that beginner/intermediate grammar workbooks do, but it covers them at a higher level. It's more of a "sticky point" clarification/practice grammar workbook. From the very beginning, the book assumes that you have a good knowledge of the entire verb system (both simple and compound tenses) and a pretty extensive vocabulary. It does hold off on the subjunctive for a time, but it goes right into some pretty sophisticated sentence constructs from the start.

One reviewer mentions that the book is confusing--it's not confusing if you're fairly comfortable with Spanish grammar. It's challenging, but not confusing. HOWEVER, if you don't have a command of elementary grammar, I can tell you that you will definitely be confused and/or really stretched early in the book. You probably won't be ready for this one.

However, if you've been through some of the other grammar workbooks and are looking for something more challenging and sophisticated, this might just be the ticket. As for the content, I'd say it is excellent practice--but then again, I'm pretty comfortable with Spanish grammar. Even at that, I was stretched at times. I like the way this book starts right off with more advanced sentence structures than I've seen in any of the other Spanish grammar books I've gone through (and I have gone through quite a number of them). It also works into some things that I've not seen at all in other Spanish grammar books. It's an excellent book, just be aware that it's not really appropriate for a beginner as the books cover mistakenly indicates.

PS: For those of you who are a bit more advanced, this same author (Vallecillos) has just released "Advanced Spanish Grammar" that you might also consider to supplement this one. It looks to be a great book. I just got it and will write a review when I get into it a bit more.

NOT FOR BEGINNERS

I am a beginner and this book says "Perfect for beginners" on the front. No way! There are no English translations, the vocabulary is very difficult, even using a separate spanish dictionary i couldn't get the right answers for many questions, or find definitions for some words. I thought it must be supposed to go along with a text book or something because there is an answer guide but no explanation of how to get the answers yourself. I'll try again in a few years!

A Good Book but Not for the Kindle

This is a good book for drills. It covers a lot of confusing grammar points well. However, this is not a book for the kindle. The answer key is in the back and even when you bookmark it, it is difficult going back and forward. I would buy this book in paper form.

Vernadsky has become more popular since USSR fell

Contrary to what the previous reviewer has heard, George Vernadsky was criticized during the Soviet era by the Moscow regime because he was not a Marxist but a traditional historian. His learnings were with the White forces in teh Russian Civil War and he fled Russia when the Reds won. He has become popular since the USSR collapsed because he is a "Euroasianist" who sees Russia as a multinational empire throughout history that was trying to operate (and should) as a nation. He was never opposed to Russian greatness, just to the Soviet dictatorship which had driven him from his beloved homeland; which was the Ukraine within a Greater "Eurasian" Russia stretching across to the Pacific. This grand view is popular with President Putin and other "nationalists" who want post-Soviet Russia to still be a major world power as Tsarist Russia was before the Communist Revolution.

One of the most useful tools for Environmental Engineers

This book has the most extense inventory, sector by sector, of data related to processes, emissions and control techniques. Therefore, we have here a major supply of guidelines and useful information for our work in our everyday struggle to "play doctors" with our own planet.

Excellent, I use mine all the time ...

The only complaint I might have with this book is the format, it's a big book, and given how often I need it, a smaller handbook (like the CRC handbook) would be more convenient. But then that might hurt the readability.

The book itself however is awesome, comprehensive, readable, plenty of illustrations, minimum of jargon, and useful for engineers and scientists.

As the title suggests, this book is a collection of circuits. The circuits are all well-designed and functional although they do seem chosen at random. The technology is old (very old, I have seen versions of these from the 1940s) but it does work - mostly. This book is probably pitched at the self-taught private detective who is not too fussy about the local eavesdropping laws. This is definitely not what your country's internal securty force is using!

Despite the title there is nothing in this book that you could not find in any good text on electronics design or acoustic engineering; indeed that's what the professionals would be using. But for students who are bright but directionless "design a bug for the principal's office" is always a better motivator than "read chapter six and attempt the odd-numbered questions". For security professionals it defines the lower end of the threat spectrum - not what government agencies are using.

Circuit schematics are provided along with a theoretical description and some practical tips.

The book presents the circuits in six sections:
In the section on surveillance, the circuits include a simple subcarrier generator for an FM bug, a hookswitch bypass for older style (non-electronic) phones and some very old (but useful) techniques for hardwire and telephone taps. Some voice activation circuits and high gain amplifiers are also mentioned.
The section on remote control offers some very simple but useful techniques turning common consumer electronics into remote controlled devices.
The section of infra-red flashers provides variations on the same circuit - a blinking IRED which can be tracked at night with an infrared scope or a video camera.
The section on counter surveillance provides some well-known techniques for tracing radio bugs, phone taps and hardwire taps.
The section on receiver enhancements provides some simple techniques to receive subcarrier or carrier current transmissions on an HF communications receiver.
There is a section mostly dealing with circuits that record unauthorised entries or phone use.

Most circuits are old, but well-proven technology. A few would be dangerous enough in North America with their 110 volt mains, but they are guaranteed lethal in the remainder of the world where 220, 230 or 240 volts is more common, or where 415 volt three-phase systems are in use.

A word of caution here. Most governments have made illegal the construction, possession, distribution (by sale or otherwise), use or use of material obtained from eavesdropping devices except in special circumstances so you are advised to check your local laws if you want to do more than read this book.

On the other hand, successful prosecutions are rare and similar devices are openly advertised for sale. Detection of these devices is difficult. Any competent hobbyist could produce this equipment from readily available components or by disassembly of consumer items.

But before you go into business consider this advice. Whether your clients are cops, spies or gangsters, they are eavesdroppers and conspirators - they are inherently untrustworthy. They don't regard you as an electronic genius - you're just the hired help, some geek who is useful but expendable. Look after number one! The smartest player is often the one who does not join the game.

I found some very interesting and overlooked circuits here!

A friend of mine and I were very impressed with his simple Subcarrier Converter for transmitters and his SCA decoder using a very common, mid-price range communications receiver. We have never seen such an unusual and highly effective technique for preventing the casual listener from over-hearing covert intercepts. Some of the other books like Basement Buggers Bible (though really great and with much more detailed plans), for some reason, did not have some of these more sophisticated modulation schemes. His simple Carrier Current By-pass technique really worked well on a recent case. We found the Capacitors that he recomended for the By-pass at a Ham Fest (they were a little hard to find though)...

Bench-Tested Circuits : For Surveillance and Countersurveill

My buddy and me used some of the circuits from this book and his second Bench Tested Circuits book and were able to fool a high priced Counter Measures team with a big van loaded with CM equipment. We were in some god forsaken town that only had a Radio Shack and a Hardware store. The circuits are simple but work just as well as the more high priced circuits that we have seen. Many of this guy's simple techniques are almost impossible to detect. Our client was very happy when he listened to the chatter from the CM people.
