Surprisingly Interesting and Useful

I picked up THE BIRTH ORDER CONNECTION with a bit of skepticism. How can the order of your birth have anything to do with finding the right person to marry? It almost made me want to laugh out loud. A few chapters into the book convinced me I was wrong, and I was hooked. Dr. Leman has laid out a fantastic and pragmatic guidebook of principles and steps based upon the order of your birth that really can help you find a more compatible mate (to achieve, as he amusingly puts it, "couple power").
Leman bases his thesis on the belief that your total family environment, not just your parents, shapes the kind of person you become. Firsts, middles, lasts, and onlies all have certain strengths and weaknesses that are determined by the roles that they have to play with their siblings. As a result, each birth type has a specific, better match with another birth type. Leman would've lost me if he would've played hard and fast with his rules, but he recognizes that their are exceptions. Sometimes, for example, middle children can take on the role of firstborns, depending on age gaps, the sex of the eldest, etc. It's all a bit complicated, but Leman does an excellent job of explaining the details and why it all works. The whole idea of birth order having such an effect on personality development became incredibly intriguing, but we must move on.
So what does this all have to do with relationships? As already stated, Leman believes that each birth position has a better match with another birth position. The strengths of one will counter the weaknesses of another, equaling a better match. Also, understanding birth order can help make relationships and marriages stronger because, as with personality types, to understand birth order is to better understand your spouse. Finally, Leman lays out practical paths to follow in your dating relationships. Asking seven specific questions, for example, can help you determine if you really are compatible with the person you are seeing. Recognizing red flags will help you avoid a life of marital misery. And he lists important reasons to and not to consider when you marry.
I've read quite a few books on relationships. Some are good (BOY MEETS GIRL, BOUNDARIES IN DATING) and some are not so good. THE BIRTH ORDER CONNECTION surprised me by being one of the best. Leman's ideas are not set in stone rules, but they are outstanding principles and guidelines that can help you make wise decisions in choosing someone to be with. Do yourself a favor and pick this one up. It's well worth the ... investment. FIVE STARS.

Interesting but not so objective

The author does a good job describing birth-order tendencies in an approachable way and applying knowledge about these tendencies to marriage. He does take a somewhat subjective approach, basing his conclusions on what he has seen in his marriage counseling practice and his own family, but his assertions ring true (plus the subjective approach makes the book more interesting). The author has some traditional views about dating, but he does not try to hide the fact that they are his personal views. The best thing about reading the book is that it is a fun topic to bring up in just about any conversation. Everyone has a birth order, and everyone knows people who fit the profile for their birth order and people who are exceptions. If you don't read this book, I strongly recommend reading some book on this topic.

The Birth Order Connection is by far one of the better relationship books I've ever read. It helps to explain why people are the way they are and it then helps you match your spouse/significant other appropriately. I wish I had read the book years ago ... it would have saved me a lot of time, money and unnecessary heartache.

A common sense philosophy in too many words

This book is a lot of words that can be summed up in two sentences. Positive thinking only works within the scope of realistic goals. Positive thinking alone cannot lead to achievement, because action is key to making things happen.

Good advice, but also common sense. I don't feel like this book added any value or new knowledge. It's fairly wordy for a simple concept.

Fascinating and incredibly timely!

I'm a computer programmer, so this book was right up my alley. But still, I was surprised how much I learned, not just about computer history. This book shows how sexism hurts economies and entire nations. It's sad how much it resonates with what's going on today. A good read for anyone who is interested in why computing is the way it is right now and why talented, smart women still aren't given their due. The reason for this is all about power and history, not about women not being "good enough." And, the British example is a cautionary tale for the US: if we want to avoid a quick slide into second-rate world power status we'd do well to learn from their mistakes.

On the brighter side, this book has tons of neat photos and cartoons of early computing, and the ways that women were represented in the early days of computing are truly surprising. From satirical cartoons to topless bikini shots (really) you'll see women represented as experts, idiots, and everything in between. The personal stories of the people interviewed were also great. Way more stories about people being electrocuted (or almost electrocuted) by computers than I would've imagined!

Mismatch between the book's code examples and the downloaded code or Codio versions was confusing and frustrating. Because of that it wasn't possible to easily follow along with the book's project file. Overall this is a good overview or survey of Foundation 5's features and functionality but the best resource for learning this material is the Zurb Foundation documentation.

This book was way over rated and over priced because it did not deliver. Most of what is found in the book is free on the web and in many cases you can find out more detail online. There were a few cases where the subject was well covered but that was more the exception than the rule. Many topics are just left hanging so beginners trying to learn Foundation will still be left in the dark. I really hate to give such a bad review but the fact is at $40 this is a real rip off. It is a $19.95 book at best.

A Good Introduction to prototyping with Zurb Foundation

Zurb Foundation is a framework that offers many capabilities for any website, and this book manages to illustrate the ins and outs of most of them. The book is structured well, and each example includes the code, and a description of what the result should look like. Unfortunately, for many of the early chapters there are no diagrams or screenshots of what the results should look like. The introductory chapters may actually be the chapters where readers run into issues, as opposed to the last chapters, and so it seems a little remiss.

The language in the book is easy to follow, while remaining formal enough to sound professional. The examples given, as well as the premise of the book (prototyping via Foundation) are both applicable, and useful. The second half of the book is dedicated to creating a prototype, as well as focusing on what’s required to run foundation in your project. Some of the chapters on configuring your project folder seemed a little brief for those unfamiliar with the tools being used, but overall conveyed all important information. This is hardly a fault, as the book is focused more on using Zurb Foundation than installing it (which is covered fairly well on their website as well).

To sum up: The book is a well-written example of how to use Zurb Foundation to create a prototype, while offering some further information into the features available, as well as how to configure and test your website. While it could use a few more visual examples in the introductory chapters, it is otherwise a good resource for developers interested in using Foundation to prototype websites.

Easy but Entry level

Easy to read. This is an ENTRY level book to Game Theory, but that is what I wanted. I read it over winter break and it helped lay the foundation for me to ace a PhD level Game Theory course.

Fascinating stuff

I got this book as an accompaniment for a Game Theory class I am taking currently. I enjoyed reading this on the side. It was not as easy to read as my assigned textbook but I felt that it went into greater depth about certain subjects vs. the traditional game theory book.

I would recommend this for Econ majors (such as myself) or those with a particular penchant for Game Theory.

Error-riddled Kindle Edition

Don't buy the Kindle Edition. The typesetting is horrible, it is impossible to read. What's more, there are typos everywhere, and some of the formulas are incorrect and certainly do not match the original, printed version.

With most mistakes you can puzzle out what the original probably says, but at one point, the author intends to use a cumulative probability function F(x) and then f(x) to denote its derivative, but the Kindle Edition depicts them both capital F(x). I'm a patient man, but that's what prompted me to write this review and warn others away.

Maybe it'll do in a pinch if you really, really hate printed books, but avoid if at all possible.
