This is a good book for its own sake

This is a good book for its own sake, but the main thing is that it's an enjoyable way to learn about history in excellent detail through fiction. If you are writing a doctoral thesis on world war 2 politics and history, it's probably not detailed and accurate enough, but if you're just a normal person who hasn't read anything like this since high school or a first year college survey of American history class. Almost no other writer takes you through a story with as much historical detail as Follett, so that you feel like you have been taught a proper lesson along with it. Personally I really enjoy this type of thing and it's my idea of a good time, so this is exactly the type of book I take to the beach. I am a very weird person though, and not a lot of fun at parties. If you are a normal person who has normal person interests, this isn't necessarily the lightest and easiest read. It's long, it's full of facts and details, but those are also its main selling points. If you want something to read in a day with the TV on in the background, or is a quick fix, this is a bad choice. It does have deep interesting characters who develop not only through the first book that preceded this one, but through this book and the third book in the series, action and tragedy, and a wealth of historical information that has a great deal of value beyond the enjoyment of the fictional aspects of the story. I highly recommend this whole series to anyone who enjoys historical fiction.

History and fiction blend comfortably

I couldn't put the book down. Several fictional plots are drawn amidst a well defined historical background - fictional characters sometimes meeting, or even working with well-known historical figures, thus highlighting some lesser-known characteristics of and facts about them. As this is the second book of Ken Follett's trilogy, many of the characters were either introduced in his first book, Fall of the Giants, or are the offspring of those characters.The story takes place before, during and after World War II and the main characters play out in Germany, Britain, the USA and the Soviet Union. Circumstances, historic, or otherwise, force these characters to gravitate towards each other and the reader senses that they are connected somehow and will inevitably meet.
The novel covers a wide range of world events; the rise of Nazism, the ascent of Franco in Spain, the Battle of Moscow, the Blitz, the Normandy landings, the attack on Pearl Harbor, the development of the atom bomb, the fall of Berlin and many more. This was a fun way of brushing up on my history.

Several of the problems I found in this book have been well-described by others: two-dimensional characters, sanitizing the prejudices of the times with cultural anachronisms, and plot contrivances that defy all efforts to susbend disbelief. Good stories have events service the characters. In this book, the characters only exist to service events. With the exception of Daisy, none of the second generation characters grab my interest as much as the the characters from the first book.

All of the "good guys" have tolerant, 21st century attitudes towards blacks, Jews, homosexuals, and sex. It seems that with every new book Mr. Follett's anachronisms have gotten worse and worse. I began to notice them in Pillars of the Earth, but by the time the modern-thinking, twelfth century, yuppie power-couple in World Without End started spouting psychobabble about their daughter's low self-esteem, I'd had enough. Somehow I hoped this trilogy would be better. I'll have to go back and re-read Eye of the Needle and Triple to see if they were as bad. If they were, then my tastes have changed.

But the worst annoyance for me is that Mr. Follet insists on explaining his characters' every reaction and line of dialog, as if we're not smart enough to understand what they're thinking without dumbing it down for us. It ruins the flow and bugs the heck out of me. A good writer develops his characters so well that we understand the feelings, perspectives and motivations behind their dialog, without having them re-explained after every sentence. It's like explaining the punchline of a joke: If you have to do that, then you didn't tell it right.

I greatly admire Mr. Follet's attention to detail and all the work that must have gone into this book, but it reads like it was written by an amateur romance novelist. For good "you are there" historical fiction, I much prefer Herman Wouk's "The Winds of War."

Keri Smith Has Done it Again!!

Once again Ms. Smith has put together a book that can get anyone excited about books, writing and creating. I gave this to my 9-year old son who immediately proclaimed "this book is boring." I said nothing, left it on his table and within 24 hours I noticed he had taken a fervent interest in the book. Cutting the chase, after about a week, he had given up the quest to find some something-or-other in a video game to work on many of the "assignments" in this book. He was outside, in the house, on the Internet doing all kinds of sleuthing, investigating and researching. He wrote plenty about his findings (more than anything he's done in school) and applied a lot of the process to an upcoming class project (Hallelujah!!!! can you hear the bells ringing??). And I noticed he proudly took this book to school to show some of his friends what he's been doing. For an upcoming friend's birthday, he insisted this was what he wanted, and now there's a group of kids who are all over this book, creating their own manuals, guides, etc.

Please, oh please, Ms. Smith, do another one soon!!!

Being An Investigative-Creative. A Review of Finish This Book.

My business partner and I (both branding & creative consultants) became super fans of Keri Smith when we cracked open her book, Explorer of the World, while on a business trip to Atlanta. So when we came across Smith's Finish This Book while on another branding adventure in Lawrence, Kansas we knew we had to pick it up. We didn't quite realize the creative adventure this book would take us on as we road-tripped back home. My 11-year-old self would have flipped out over how cool Finish This Book is - okay who am I kidding, the creative professional I am today also flipped out (and learned a lot) over Smith's newest book.

Here's how it goes - on a dark and stormy night (the way all good stories begin) Keri Smith stumbles upon scattered pages from an abandoned instruction manual in a park. And now she is counting on you, the reader, to help her solve this mystery. Finish This Book is broken up into four interactive sections including Secret Intelligence Training, Documenting and Observing Methods, Artifact Examination Techniques and finally The Instruction Manual. You are instructed to complete an exercise on each page - it is up to you to populate Finish This Book with the necessary content in order for it to be a book at all.

What Keri Smith does with Finish This Book is give you permission (and resources) to be a creative problem solver while finding your own unique voice and creative authority. She facilitates a creative process that takes something huge - like writing a book - and breaks it down into small but powerful exercises. Smith holds you accountable and empowers you with the responsibility of making choices and putting them down on paper - so when you do get to the end you're not back-pedaling or doubting yourself. And when you turn the last page you've not only finished the book - you have become a creator in the process. Through a series of logical steps you have found your voice and you have written a story.

I can't tell you much more without spoiling the book. So I beg you - go out and buy it for yourself - or your creative department. And if you don't have the time (or courage) to finish it please - pass it on to a brave and curious 11-year-old you might know.

Creative, but not what I expected

I would recommend this book to creative people who enjoy thinking, taking life at a strolling pace, and most importantly, ENJOY WRITING.

While I am sure this book is extremely fun to complete, it was not what I was hoping for. The book description promises that the reader/author will have the task of "solv[ing] the mystery of this unexpected discovery," but there isn't really a non-abstract, solvable mystery in this book. It is actually a collection of activities the book suggests the reader complete including doodling trees and observing an animal. This book is a well-organized collection of seemingly random "adventures" and is essentially a journal or diary but with instructions on every page telling you how to fill it out.

Examples of activities:
- "Create your own small imaginary world out of whatever you have lying around. Place it in a natural setting."
- "Read a book at your secret headquarters. Share a passage from the book. Rewrite it here."
- "Spend some time watching the sky. Document it in some way."

I believe that this book is a great creative outlet for people who naturally jot down their thoughts and write for fun. It would also make a good group book that you can pass among friends or complete with family. I was just disappointed because I was expecting some sort of puzzle.

Great book for understanding and implementing Microservices!

When I started reading this book, I wasn't sure if Microservices were right for me. Though, after getting through the first couple of chapters I realized that this is exactly what I have been looking for. Jake has a down-to-earth way of breaking this complex subject down into easy to digest bits.

He starts by explaining what exactly Microservices are and why you should give them a try. He next launches into what you can implement them. There are so many different options that it becomes clear almost immediately just how useful they are when using Java POJO, Gradle, or Spring Boot.

He finally hits upon getting everything configured properly and how to set up the user interface.

I am a believer now that Microservices can more than deliver on my scalability, security and decentralized data management needs.

This book is perfect for anyone who want so learn more about Microservices and a clear plan to get them up and running in no time.

Microservice architecture, or simply microservices, is a distinctive method of developing software systems that has grown in popularity in recent years. And that's why i got curious in this book. This book is perfect for anyone who want so learn more about Microservices and a clear plan to get them up and running in no time. Reading this book is really worth it, I have a curiosity to learn Microservice architecture in a deeper, more comprehensive way!
