Bargain: A Pearl of Wisdom for under US$20

The Race is the most accessible presentation of the Theory of Constraints as applied to production. All the key concepts are right here with a handful of presentation slides on the right hand pages and talking points on the left hand pages. You'll even have plenty of room for notes. As an added bonus, there are five simple exercises which let you test how well you understand what you read.
There is a best way to read this book! Read it this way ...
- Get about 10-20 sheets of paper and a pencil.
- On 5-10 sheets of paper, work the five exercises in the back.
- DO NOT mark on the exercise pages.
- DO NOT check your answers, yet.
- Read the book.
- On 5-10 more sheets of paper, work the exercises, AGAIN.
��Yes, do them over, really. Do not let your first try
��influence the second attempt.
- DO NOT mark on the exercise pages.
- Check all your answers against the official answers.
- Think about what you learned.

Failing to exploit the exercises makes it too easy to convince yourself that you already knew all that obvious stuff. Another excellent Goldratt book

Does an excellent job of expanding on the Drum-Buffer-Rope concept and application first mentioned in The Goal. It's a quick read that doesn't dive into the details of exactly how to identify constraints and other operational issues, but that makes it perfect as an introduction.

Necessary supplement

Business is back to usual. Tough days are here again. Organizations need to excel to be competitive in whatever they do in the race to retain customers and profits. The last decade of the last century was perhaps an exception to this rule. Now it makes sense to revisit books that show us the means to achieve excellence in operations; books written by Eliyahu Goldratt.
This is a book with a difference from Goldratt. The focus is on getting the concepts straight through illustrations and not in the form of a novel.
The goal of all businesses is to make money in the present as well as in the future. We have measurements like Net Profits, ROI, and Cash Flow to assess bottom line performance. We use the cost concept as a bridge to arrive at these measures. The book challenges the cost concept and looks at using Throughput, Inventory and Operating Expenses as the bridges that will lead us in the right direction. These terms or 'Global Operational Measures" are defined in a way that is different from conventional.
-Throughput - The rate at which the system generates money through sales.
-Inventory- All the money the system invests in purchasing things the system intends to sell.
-Operating Expense- All the money the system spends in turning inventory into throughput.
In order to succeed in the market place, six competitive edge issues are identified - Product (Quality and Engineering), Price (Higher Margins and Lower Investment per unit), Responsiveness (Due-date Performance and Shorter quoted lead-time).
Having defined these measures, the book looks at the critical role of inventory (at all stages). The high inventory syndrome leads to a lower performance in all the competitive edges. The manufacturing system then should get into the mode of "Synchronized Manufacturing". This is a unique combination of concepts like JIT, zero-defect and Drum-Buffer-Rope (DBR) approach. In fact I found that this is the best among all of Goldratt's books to understand the DBR concept. It helps in identifying the Capacity Constraint Resources (CCRs) and balances the entire manufacturing system to towards the globally optimal solution that can achieve our overall goal.
The book contains some interesting exercises at the end to ensue that the concepts are well understood.
A must read for all managers to achieve break through improvements in operations - manufacturing and service. The race is on and is getting hotter than ever. We need to keep pace to remain in this race. The second best may not survive to have another chance.

Not what I expected

For a book that touts venison as one of the healthiest red meats, I thought it would have healthier recipes. Most of the recipes fit in the category of soup, stew, or casserole. And several list ingredients like prepackaged dry soup mix, refrigerator biscuits, bottled sauces/gravies, processed cheese, and pre mixed seasoning blends. This may be what some people are looking for. I am not interested in tainting my hard earned kill with processed off the shelf pre packaged junk food. Sadly I will keep looking for good, healthy, and tasty venison recipes. I give it 3 stars, because the author has taken the time to put together quite a bit of information, both for cooking and hunting. I also understand that many people are probably looking for these kind of "easy" recipes. I would like to find a book that celebrates the simple taste of the meat without smothering it in some kind of gravy or sauce.

I have tried a lot of the ground venison recipes and they all have been better than expected. The recipes have ways I would never think of to make venison taste great. I have tried other venison cookbooks and they just don't stack up to this one. I was not a big venison fan (didn't grow up eating it) but these recipes make venison taste really good.

Bless you Davis My Hero!

Not big on writing reviews, still in school, don't have time for it but I wanted to spread the word. This book was my lifeline. Peds quarter for us was KILLER! And it took out a few of our classmates as well as added a few from the class before. It was the turning point for so many. I made it though but I did so because I had this and I used it well.
The way the questions are worded prepared me for how the tests were going to be and by studying the rationales as well, I was able to critically think through the questions I wasn't sure of. No lie, I wouldn't have made it through without this book and the OB one as well.
I am currently in my mental health quarter and have the Davis book for that as well. Once again, I am passing thanks to the Q&A format of these books. When I graduate, I'll find this Davis person and Kiss him on the lips!!
One key piece of advice, don't just ask and answer, really study the rationales because they are the key to the tests.

Good review for class and N-CLEX.

I own a lot of the books in the series including fundamentals, test taking strategies and med surge. These are a great review and the CD is helpful. I also own the Hogan review books. I like the hogan books better because they have N-CLEX alerts in the margins and my instructors almost always have test questions on that material. I have placed level 2 on all of my ATI tests. I also get A's and B's in all my nursing classes since I started using these books. If you can buy both the Davis and the Hogan books then do it. If you can't afford both then I say go for the Hogan books. Stay away from the Lippincott's made easy series. Those were lame!

About the Author
Alexander Bennett holds doctorates from the University of Canterbury and Kyoto University. He has worked for the International Research Center for Japanese Studies and is currently Associate Professor at Kansai University's Department of International Affairs. Best version of Hagakure

Hagakure is required reading for anyone seeking to understand the samurai mind, which still influences Japanese culture deeply, even today. Although the book "Bushido" is more famous, it was written long after the samurai had ceased to exist, and distorts the facts to suit a Christian / Western viewpoint. Hagakure, however, is the real deal; it was dictated by a samurai serving a lord during the mid-Edo period, and provides invaluable insight into the values of the Japanese warrior class.

This is the most complete translation of Hagakure yet produced in English; other translations are selected excerpts from the original. Dr Bennett's knowledge of Japanese language and history, and particularly the history of the samurai, helps the reader make sense of the subject matter. If you are going to get one version of the Hagakure, this is the one to get!

I come back to this book daily, again and again for inspiration. Gems like this are easy to find the way the book is laid out numerically.

"Nothing is impossible. With single-minded resolve (ichinen), heaven and earth can be moved as one pleases. The feeble hearts of men hinder their determination. A man's fecklessness prevents him making up his mind. 'Moving heaven and earth without using any strength' can be achieved with-single minded determination."

Best translation of Hagakure I've read so far

Dr. Alex Bennett's translation of Hagakure is the first version I've come across which manages to both capture the historical context of Yamamoto Tsunetomo's writings and view it through modern perspective. The world described by Tsunetomo can often seem very alien and the underlying meaning of many passages is not obvious to the modern reader. Dr. Bennetts extensive knowledge of Japanese culture and Budo history provides the necessary historical and cultural context required to understand the mindset of a 18th century samurai. This version have made several passages which previously were incomprehensible to me as clear as day and made me re-evaluate my opinions of Hagakure. A must read for anyone who has an interest in the samurai culture and the Tokugawa-era.

This is a good book on Sales Management. It focus on the Planning, Control and Strategies for Sales Management but not on the selling process (skills, close the deal, selling psychology, etc.) like other Stephan Schiffman, and Jeffrey Gitomer's books...

Rip off

It could have been submitted as a stand alone novel. Why share it in three parts? Marketing? I bought though the 2 parts only to see the ending but seriously, I felt ripped off.

It's really too bad cause the author has the talent to make the readers laugh. And that's what kept me going. But at the end of the day, I would've appreciated reading it as a whole instead of the cliff hangers for a few dollars. Charge me the book, pls just don't make me buy pieces of it to appreciate the whole thing.

wedding time

Rebecca is pregnant and Marcus is thrilled. Not that either of them has ever given any thought to having children or for that matter where their relationship is going. In fact, marriage and children are Rebecca’s two biggest fears and she been faced with both of them in a very short period of time.

The rest of this book is the trials and tribulations of trying to have a relationship, plan a wedding, and be pregnant all while trying to deal with a media that wants to eat you up and spit you out. It’s kind of fun but at the same time Rebecca starts to get on my nerves because everything things start to get rough she runs….to Washington, for coffee, to Amanda. It gets old quick. It was a good series but quite frankly for the length of the books and the price tag accompanying them, just have me pay for it as a box set or put a price on all three. Here’s the one thing I know, if the books are good enough, people will pay to read them.

Oh and I almost forgot to mention….the editing, proofreading of the third book needs to serious be checked. I re-read a couple of pages twice just to make sure I had not missed something….and did we suddenly forget what we had wrote about whom was supposed to walk with whom at the wedding. It didn’t work because the editors missed it.
