Not a Winner for Me

Took a couple of runs at this book. I like the concept of solving problems using the theory of constraints, identifying what is constraining you from your goals and working through those constraints. I thought this book would be educational and useful in solving those problems but I found it to be written in a way that was very difficult to understand. Also, to be fair, I was looking to use the information for personal use, identifying and working through personal, work problems. This book is written for use in businesses. Usually I can extrapolate information back to personal use but I couldn't do it with this book. Basically, I found it very frustrating. The book is possibly good for people in corporations, manufacturing, etc. if you can wade through what I consider a difficult writing style but I finally just pitched the book in the trash can.

As many others commented, this is a regurgitation of other Goldratt material including a lot of reprint. While there were some very important learnings in this book, not enough new material accompanied by the worst grammar / typo count I have ever seen and a feeling of manipulation toward further training material left me feeling a little empty. The Goal was transformational but this is NOT the ideal followup read. Critical Chain and The Race are next.

Hard to follow

Hard to follow, partially because the explanations were specific to the manufacturing industry and sometimes the logic was not as obvious to me as to the author. The excerpts from The Goal, however, were excellent and I plan to get that book. I found a reference to another book on Theory of Constraints called Tame the Flow: Hyper-Productive Knowledge-Work Management that I am going to get.

A Splendid introduction to help your little ones grasp the meaning of middle class angst

It is the perennial question for most modern parents and that is when do I induct little Chlamydia, Jocasta or Harrison into the constantly rewarding world of modern art. Well help is at hand in this small but mighty tome. Replete with helpful pictures that not only capture the essence of works of ‘no meaning’ but also act as a visual reference to what you should encounter in any self respecting and, one would hope, ‘self loathing’ modern art gallery.

This is the first in a series of what I am sure will be invaluable educational aids for the socially upwardly mobile amongst us. Your child needs to know and more importantly appreciate the utter void of talent that represents true art. It is pointless and that is the point. At once confusing and yet totally understandable. But for the untrained eye and developing brain of little Thermopylae , Shakira or Bronson this may need to be addressed in a more sensitive way and this gem of a manual will be your god send in this quest.

My only quibble is that it is only 44 information packed pages and I managed to finish it over a period of several weeks as my injuries from being over critical at a Damian Hirst preview mean that I find it difficult to turn pages. I am moist with anticipation of the follow up and also think it’s about time this foundation considered a reissue if their exceptionally helpful 1938 publication ‘Why we burn books’ an early learning guide to fascism – my copy ironically got burnt during an impromptu police raid during an unconventional power cut – such is life, such is art and such is marvellous literature.

A must-read

Jonathan Gregory's initial number in his Gemini & Flowers mystery series is an auspicious beginning indeed.It is set in a very old English village where a generous (and gay) lord of the manor makes it possible for people of multiple income ranges to live comfortably. The "mystery" part comes in with an unidentified modern-day highwayman is on the loose, robbing and in one instance cold-bloodedly killing a young man who put up a mild resistance to being relieved of his earthly possessions. The lord of the manor is also a highly successful illustrator who is surrogate parent to two unusual young boys who seem to possess some unusual powers. I highly recommend this book. It is not filled with lusty sex, as desirable as that is. Instead the emphasis is on building a story that will grab--and hold--the reader's interest. The best testament to a series author's abilities is if readers will purchase the second volume. I am reading it now!

I enjoyed this book so much that I had difficulty in resisting the temptation to consume it all at one go to find out what happened. The setting, the structure and theme are most unusual, and the details most elegantly woven together in such a way that I felt the village and its inhabitants all existed somewhere. The humour ranges from bawdy to wry, with some very perceptive and mature observations of personality and emotion. I think the book has set the scene for a sequel, and I look forward to meeting all the characters again in the next volume for which I am content to wait, trusting that the author takes his time to create a follow-up which is equally beguiling.

A wonderful Life in Rilton Castle

Mr. Gregory writes at the end of his book that he started writing Country Life in order to have a book that he himself would like to read. I don't know about him, but I had a GREAT time with this book. It is fun, thoughtful, somewhat Utopian in a good sense, and immensely satisfying. I was really sad when I zoomed through the book and suddenly realized it was all coming to an end - but then you get to the last pages and BANG, so to speak.

I highly recommend the book. I am REALLY looking forward to the next installment.

Early Social Science on Past Lives

This was one of the first books I read about past lives. I found it fascinating because I was coming from a very intellectual background. Years ago, after reading it, I went to three of Helen's events, which were held in hotels in the San Francisco Bay Area, and what happened to me there changed my life.

I "remembered" or "re-experienced" some very amazing things, and went on to research what I had "remembered." I found historical evidence that what I had "relived" was true! An actual headstone in a graveyard with the name and date of death I'd come up with as mine??? Wow!!! That gave me a new perspective on who I was.

Since then, I have gone on to experience many metaphysical situations. I highly recommend this book as an introduction to the concept of reincarnation. She is very scientific in her data-gathering. Now that I "know" reincarnation as a personal truth, I'm not interested in documentation any more, but to a person who is skeptical or unsure, I would highly recommend this book for the research.

Astounding

Wambach's evidence is, in my view, the most amazing ever published on the topic of reincarnation. I am surprised that this book has received so little attention. I wonder why others have not attempted to replicate her results using her methods. I wonder why nobody has bothered to interview Wambach's 1000 plus experiencers. I was happy to see that the other Amazon review of this book was done by one of the experiencers, Misha's Mom. I hope other experiencers will post the details of their sessions. David A. Harbour is a long-time amateur telescope maker and designer of optical telescopes and mirror testing apparatus. He is a skilled photographer and pilot and owner/operator of Great Plains Instruments, of Enid, Oklahoma. Now retired, he has permitted some of his narratives on astronomical mirror making to be published.

A New Classic is Born

This book truly is destined, as its cover suggests, to be mentioned in the same breath as Texereau and Ingalls. Unlike the works of the other two authors, however, this treatise is the first to explain the Foucault Test in a manner that will render it completely understandable for anyone with an interest in telescope optics, regardless of their experience level. Additionally, numerous techniques for parabolization and figure correction are given (in detail) which I have not seen or heard of previously. If you have any interest in producing or understanding the making of a telescope mirror, you need this book in your library and the knowledge it conveys in your mind. I have read through the volumes of Texereau, Ingalls and others and never grasped Foucault thoroughly until I read David Harbour's writings. This book should find its way into the required reading for the top technical schools in the world very soon. I am fortunate to have come across these writings, which have enhanced both my knowledge and abilities.

A must have!

I've known David Harbour for many years. His deep understanding of optical shop methods and testing has been evidenced by the incredible telescopes that he has made. David has clearly walked the walk.

This work is destined to go down in history alongside the works of Draper, Ellison, Porter and Ingalls.

This book goes into the intricacies of setting up the test and understanding and interpreting the results. The reader will be left with a fine understanding of optical testing without being intimidated by complex mathematical formula.

I highly recommend this book!

Excellent Explaination, of a Complicated Subject

Dr. Davey Harbour- I happen to have the pleasure, of knowing this extremly intelligent, talented, inventive man. "Davey", has the rare gift, of being able to explain complicated ideas, in terms that a layperson, can understand. The figuring of a mirror, using the Focault test, has in the past, been an arcane, almost magical talent. Dr. Harbour has explained it, in this book, so that any young neophyte, can turn-out a perfect astronomical mirror, on their first try!
In my opinion, after being an amateur telescope maker for almost 4 decades, and a professional Astronomer, as Director of the Yale/Columbia Observatory, this short book, easy to understand, is by far the BEST book, ever written on the subject! I can HIGHLY RECCOMEND it, to any Amateur telescope Maker, weather making their first, or tenth, mirror! It will be a fine addditin to anybody's collection, of Astronomy books.
