About the Author
David A. Harbour is a long-time amateur telescope maker and designer of optical telescopes and mirror testing apparatus. He is a skilled photographer and pilot and owner/operator of Great Plains Instruments, of Enid, Oklahoma. Now retired, he has permitted some of his narratives on astronomical mirror making to be published.

A New Classic is Born

This book truly is destined, as its cover suggests, to be mentioned in the same breath as Texereau and Ingalls. Unlike the works of the other two authors, however, this treatise is the first to explain the Foucault Test in a manner that will render it completely understandable for anyone with an interest in telescope optics, regardless of their experience level. Additionally, numerous techniques for parabolization and figure correction are given (in detail) which I have not seen or heard of previously. If you have any interest in producing or understanding the making of a telescope mirror, you need this book in your library and the knowledge it conveys in your mind. I have read through the volumes of Texereau, Ingalls and others and never grasped Foucault thoroughly until I read David Harbour's writings. This book should find its way into the required reading for the top technical schools in the world very soon. I am fortunate to have come across these writings, which have enhanced both my knowledge and abilities.

A must have!

I've known David Harbour for many years. His deep understanding of optical shop methods and testing has been evidenced by the incredible telescopes that he has made. David has clearly walked the walk.
This work is destined to go down in history alongside the works of Draper, Ellison, Porter and Ingalls.
This book goes into the intricacies of setting up the test and understanding and interpreting the results. The reader will be left with a fine understanding of optical testing without being intimidated by complex mathematical formula.
I highly recommend this book!

Excellent Explaination, of a Complicated Subject

Dr. Davey Harbour- I happen to have the pleasure, of knowing this extremly intelligent, talented, inventive man. "Davey", has the rare gift, of being able to explain complicated ideas, in terms that a layperson, can understand. The figuring of a mirror, using the Focault test, has in the past, been an arcane, almost magical talent. Dr. Harbour has explained it, in this book, so that any young neophyte, can turn-out a perfect astronomical mirror, on their first try!
In my opinion, after being an amateur telescope maker for almost 4 decades, and a professional Astronomer, as Director of the Yale/Columbia Observatory, this short book, easy to understand, is by far the BEST book, ever written on the subject! I can HIGHLY RECCOMEND it, to any Amateur telescope Maker, weather making their first, or tenth, mirror! It will be a fine addditin to anybody's collection, of Astronomy books.
